Air and Sea: The Barracuda close out their eight-game season series with the Bakersfield Condors this weekend with a home-and-home, beginning on Saturday at Mechanics Bank Arena. SJB is 2-3-1-0 against Edmonton’s affiliate and 1-2 on the road. In their last meeting on Feb. 26, the Barracuda fell 3-2 at Tech CU Arena, allowing 40 shots and taking six penalties. Thomas Bordeleau and Danil Gushchin found the back of the net, but Cameron Wright broke a 2-2 tie with 3:25 left to secure the win. Entering Saturday, the Condors are two points outside of a playoff spot, with a game in hand on Tucson, and seven points behind the Barracuda.
Rise and Shine: On Wednesday morning, the Barracuda allowed a season-low 18 shots, shutting out the San Diego Gulls 4-0. For rookie netminder Gabe Carriere, the shutout was his second in four games and the team’s fifth of the season. In the win, Lucas Vanroboys and Ethan Frisch snapped lengthy goal droughts, while Danil Gushchin (PP) and Colin White (SH.EN) stayed hot.
Powering Up: The Barracuda scored multiple power-play goals in each game of their four-game road trip (10/25=40%), including four on Sunday. They have now scored power-play goals in seven straight games (13/34=38%). This seven-game streak is the longest of the season, and their four power-play goals in a single game tied a franchise record. San Jose leads the AHL in overall power-play percentage (24.5%) and road PP% (25.0%). Against the Condors, the Barracuda are 4-for-19 on the advantage and have power-play goals in their last two meetings (2/5=40%).
Hot Pot: Andrew Poturalski collected four points (3+1=4) over the weekend in Tucson, setting a new single-season franchise record for goals (27) and points (65). The nine-year veteran leads the AHL in scoring, ranks third in assists (38), and is tied for third in both goals and power-play goals (11). The New Hampshire alum has points in 16 of his last 20 games (12+17=29). Against Bakersfield, he has six points (3+3=6) in six games this season.
Luca Lightning: Rookie defenseman Luca Cagnoni made his NHL debut on Thursday against the Carolina Hurricanes, logging a game-high 23:15 of ice time. Before his recall, the 20-year-old led the AHL in power-play points (31), ranked second in power-play assists (22), and was tied for fourth in power-play goals (9). Among league defensemen, he ranks second in both points (47) and goals (13). The Burnaby, B.C. native has already set a franchise record for power-play goals (9) by a defenseman and is just one goal shy of matching the organization's single-season record for goals by a blueliner, set by Tim Heed (2016-17) and Nick DeSimone (2018-19).
Dan the Man: Danil Gushchin extended his point streak to five games on Wednesday with a goal and an assist, bringing his total to seven points (3+4=7) over that span. The third-year pro matched his personal best for goals in a season on Wednesday, netting his 22nd of the year. His 11 power-play goals are tied for the team lead with Andrew Poturalski and match the franchise’s single-season record. Over his last 10 games, Gushchin has eight goals and seven assists.
Carriere Clog: Since Yaroslav Askarov’s injury on Feb. 19, Gabe Carriere has started eight of the Barracuda’s last 11 games, going 4-2-2 over that stretch with a 2.38 goals-against average, a .918 save percentage, and two shutouts. The Sharks signed the 24-year-old to an NHL contract for the remainder of the season on Mar. 7. He is in his first year out of the University of Vermont.
Cap is Back: The Sharks recalled defenseman Lucas Carlsson for the first time this season on Friday, and in a corresponding move, assigned Barracuda captain Jimmy Schuldt to the AHL. Schuldt, who had just one NHL game under his belt prior to this season, has appeared in five of the Sharks' last six outings. Carlsson, who signed a two-year, two-way deal with the Sharks this summer, has skated in 60 career NHL games with Chicago and Florida. His last NHL action came on Nov. 1, 2022, at Arizona as a member of the Panthers.
