SAN JOSE SHARKS ROOKIES HELD OFF BY ARIZONA, 5-3

Sep 18, 2023

Las Vegas, NV – The San Jose Sharks rookie team dropped their final game of the 2023 Rookie Faceoff at City National Arena on Monday morning, scoring three times but allowing five goals from the Arizona Coyotes rookie group.

The first period saw just one goal, coming off the stick of Arizona Coyotes rookie camp invite Drew Elliot just past the four-minute mark of the first period.

Sharks Rookie Faceoff invite Félix Gagnon would score one of his own to tie the game 3:32 into the second period. The score would remain tied for the next 14:30 until Josh Doan scored to restore the Coyotes lead. Just under a minute later, 2022 11th overall draft selection Conor Geekie put one behind WHL teammate Mason Beaupit to make the score 3-1 Arizona. Coyotes goaltender Anson Thornton would finish the first half of the game with a 21-save clean slate before handing off the net to Mathis Rousseau midway through the second period.

4:43 into the final 20 minutes of play, Arizona invite Cam MacDonald picked up a short-handed tally. Just under 11:30 into the period, Sharks 2023 first-round selection Quentin Musty would pick up his first of the weekend, tracking down a loose puck before a quick shot as he was falling to the ice found the back of the net to get one back for San Jose. Less than 30 seconds later, Doan would pick up his second of the game to make it a 5-2 score for the Coyotes. Continuing the rapid scoring, Brandon Coe would catch Rousseau out of position to give the Sharks their final goal of the tournament. It would be the Sharks rookies group's first and only loss of the 2023 Rookie Faceoff.

Next up is San Jose Sharks training camp with the entire rookie roster joining Sharks and Barracuda veterans at camp later this week. Check out the complete San Jose Sharks training camp roster here.
