San Jose Can't Find A Way To Win In Ontario

Ontario, CA -  The San Jose Barracuda (19-16-5-3, 46pts) presented by Barracuda Networks ended a five game road trip with a 3-2 loss to the host Ontario Reign (28-10-3-1, 60pts) in front of 9,491 fans at the Citizens Business Bank Arena on Saturday evening.

Ryan Carpenter and Ben Smith gave the Barracuda a 2-0 lead through twenty minutes, but the Reign scored three times in the second frame and held off a late Barracuda charge in the third. Troy Grosenick made 21 saves in net for San Jose while Peter Budaj made 26 saves for the Reign as the Barracuda lost for the 8th time in their last nine games.

The Barracuda charged out to an early 2-0 lead in the first period with a pair of goals just 51 seconds apart.  Ryan Carpenter (10th) fired home a rebound past Peter Budaj at 3:13 with Petter Emanuelsson picking up the primary assist.  Just 51 second later, Ben Smith (2nd) struck on the power play with a quick snap shot from the left slot assisted by Nikolay Goldobin and Bryan Lerg at 4:04.  Barracuda goaltender Troy Grosenick made several great saves with the glove as San Jose held a 2-0 lead after the first frame while holding a 13-7 shot advantage.

The Reign scored three unanswered goals in the second period and it all began just 42 seconds into the middle frame as Michael Mersch (18th) finished off a give and go down low to cut the Barracuda lead to 2-1.  Jonny Brodzinski (6th) completed a 3-on-1 rush after a great feed by Kris Newbury at 16:26 to tie the score at 2-2.  Just 16 seconds later, Ontario grabbed a 3-2 lead after a crazy goal mouth scramble found Justin Auger (9th) alone at the side of the net at 16:42 to cap the scoring in the period.  Shots were 17-15 in favor of the Barracuda through 40 minutes but San Jose trailed 3-2.

Neither team scored in the third period as San Jose had a 10-8 shot advantage in the final frame as the Barracuda fell to 1-4-0-0 on their five game road trip.

San Jose went 1-for-4 on the power play while Ontario went 0-for-4…. Frazer McLaren (inj), Raffi Torres (rest), Alex Gallant (inj), Joakim Ryan (inj), and Mark Cundari (inj) did not dress for the Barracuda… the Barracuda finished with a 0-4-2-0 record at the Citizens Business Bank Arena with the next four meetings between the Barracuda and the Reign at the SAP Center in San Jose…Petter Emanuelsson finished with a game high six shots on goal.
