With the 9th pick in the NHL Draft, the Sharks selected Timo Meier as the team’s first selection.

Many describe Meier with the words “power,” “skill,” and “determination.” He understands how to use both his size and finesse to take advantage of opportunities, find open areas on the ice, and create space for himself to set up a pass or score. He recorded a 24 game point streak this past season, tied for second-longest in the Canadian Hockey League with Connor McDavid.

1. He is only the third Swiss player that the Sharks have ever drafted. The first was Mirco Mueller, selected 18th overall in 2013, and the second was Noah Rod who was taken 53rd overall in 2014.

2. Meier led the Halifax Mooseheads in goals, with 44 in 61 games, and was second on the team in points, with 90. He led the QMJHL in game-winning goals and was second overall in the Canadian Hockey League with 10. Because of these outstanding stats, he was ranked the top draft prospect in the QMJHL.

3. He is fluent in four different languages: Swiss, French, English, and German.

4. In the 2014-15 season, Meier racked up the accolades: he won the Mike Bossy Trophy as the QMJHL Best Professional Prospect, was named to the QMJHL Second All-Star Team, was named as one of the top three players on Switzerland at the U20 World Junior tournament, and took part in the CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game.

5. Meier joins Logan Couture as the only Sharks player drafted 9th overall, and the first time the Sharks had drafted in the top ten since Couture was drafted. Other 9th overall picks include NHL players such as Dougie Hamilton (2011/Boston), James Sheppard (2006/Minnesota), and Dion Phaneuf (2003/Calgary).
