HEED POWERS SAN JOSE OVER SAN ANTONIO, 4-2
Jan 4, 2017
San Jose, CA - Tim Heed netted two third-period power-play goals and the San Jose Barracuda (16-7-1-3) topped the San Antonio Rampage (15-16-2-0), 4-2, on Wednesday night at SAP Center, in the final matchup of the season between the two clubs.
The win was San Jose's second straight and its fourth in its last five games. The Barracuda have now earned points in eight straight games on home ice dating back to Dec. 10.
Both goaltenders were strong, but Troy Grosenick (9-5-2) captured the win by making 36 saves on 38 shots, while Spencer Martin (14-8-0) suffered the loss after allowing four goals on 41 shots.
With just one second remaining on the power play, Adam Helewka slid a pass to Danny O'Regan in the slot, and O'Regan (10) fired a shot just inside the left post at 8:07. Marcus Sorensen (8) extended his point streak to a career-long five games and made it 2-0 Barracuda after Nikolay Goldobin's shot sailed over the net from the point, and Sorensen banked the loose puck from below the goal line off Spencer Martin and into the net at 13:42. A.J. Greer (10) cut San Jose's lead in half by striking on the man advantage, after his first swipe at the puck was stopped by Grosenick from the top of the crease, Greer's second attempt snuck just over Grosenick's right pad and into the net at 19:25.
In the second, San Antonio tied the game and cashed in on its third-power play as Gabriel Bourque pitchforked a loose puck under a sprawled out Grosenick and Joakim Ryan at 13:06. Grosenick adamantly disagreed with the call after the play was not whistled dead despite the puck seeming to be secured under the netminder. After an extended discussion by the officials, the call stood.
The Barracuda began the third period on the power play and took advantage just one minute and 35 seconds into the frame as Heed (8) missiled a one-time pass from Ryan to recapture San Jose's lead. Heed (9) gave the Barracuda some insurance with the San Jose's third power-play goal of the game, as the blueliner again received a Ryan pass and one-timed the shot past Martin.
