Air and Sea: After a four-game road trip, the Barracuda return to Tech CU Arena on Wednesday morning to faceoff with the San Diego Gulls (Anaheim Ducks) for Cuda Classroom Day. The Barracuda are 2-0 versus the Gulls and 1-0 at home. Wednesday marks the third meeting on the four-game season series and the first game of a four-game homestand. Entering Wednesday, the Barracuda have just 14 games left in the regular season and six home games remaining.
Morning Risers: The Barracuda are 5-2 lifetime for Cuda Classroom games. A year ago, the Barracuda beat the Henderson Silver Knights on March 15, 2023, 6-2, on Cuda Classroom Day. In the win, the Barracuda got a pair of goals from current Gulls’ forward Andrew Agozzino, as well as goals from Ozzy Wiesblatt, Martin Kaut, Danil Gushchin and Kyle Criscuolo and 21 saves from Aaron Dell.
Bad Luck: The Barracuda closed out their four-game road trip on St. Patrick’s Day in Rockford, falling 4-1 to the IceHogs. Despite outshooting the Hogs 35-24, the Barracuda never led in the game. Ethan Cardwell scored the his club’s only goal, while Rockford got a pair of goals from Cole Gutman as well as tallies from Mike Hardman and Jackson Cates. Rockford’s Rem Pitlick picked up three assists and Drew Commesso made 34 saves to earn the win.
Cuda Check: After Sunday’s loss, the Barracuda have just one win in their last 10 (1-6-1-2) and are winless in their last three (0-2-1-0). Entering Wednesday, the Barracuda have lost their last four in a row at home (0-2-0-2). Wednesday is SJB’s 30th home game of the year. The Barracuda are five points behind the Gulls in the Pacific Division.
San Squared: In the last matchup between the Barracuda and Gulls, on Valentines Day, the Barracuda fell behind just 1:46 into the first period, but reeled off five consecutive goals en-route to a 6-2 win. Jacob Peterson scored twice and Nathan Todd, Ethan Cardwell, Shakir Mukhamadullin and Kyle Rau scored. Rau (1+2=3) and Thomas Bordeleau (0+3=3) finished with a game-high three points and Georgi Romanov made 19 stops in the win.
Full Deck: Barracuda rookie forward Ethan Cardwell scored in each game over the weekend in Rockford and finished with four points (2+2=4) in the two contests. Among league rookies, he is now T-fifth in goals (17) and T-13th in scoring (33) and 12th in shots (126). On the Barracuda, he is first in goals, T-second in game-winning goals (2), third in shots, T-third in power-play goals (3), and fifth in points. Versus the Gulls, the Oshawa, Ontario, native has four points (2+2=4) in two games.
Trade Winds: The Barracuda sent forward Jordy Bellerive to the Syracuse Crunch on Friday for forward Joe Carroll. Carroll, 23, made his Barracuda debut on Sunday in Rockford. Before being dealt, the sophomore forward had 22 points (11 goals, 11 assists) through 48 games with the Crunch, including four game-winning goals, three power-play goals, a shorthanded goal, and three shorthanded assists. Carroll was a teammate of new Barracuda defenseman Jack Thompson in Syracuse earlier this year. In addition, he was a teammate of current Barracuda forwards Scott Sabourin and Cole Cassels in Belleville a season ago and Barracuda defenseman Artem Guryev in Peterborough two years ago.
Ozzy Out: The Sharks loaned Barracuda forward Ozzy Wiesblatt to the Milwaukee Admirals on Friday. Wiesblatt, who is still under contract with the Sharks through 2024-25, will return to the organization following the conclusion of the 2023-24 season. The Admirals sit atop the Central Division, 11 points ahead of the second-place Grand Rapids Griffins.
Gull Setting: The Gulls are coming off a weekend split at home against the Central’s top team, the Milwaukee Admirals. Prior to Saturday’s 3-2 loss to the Ads, the Gulls had won back-to-back and four of five. San Diego is 0-2-1-0 in their last three games on the road. San Diego is in the midst of playing nine of 10 games at home. After Wednesday, the Gulls will return home for three beginning on Friday against Texas.
