Home Sweet Home: The Barracuda return to Tech CU Arena on Wednesday to kick off a three-game homestand, beginning with a meeting with the Bakersfield Condors (Edmonton Oilers). The Cuda wrapped up a five-game road trip on Sunday afternoon in Colorado, falling 6-4 to the Eagles. Wednesday marks the fifth meeting on the season against the Condors and the fifth over the last 13 games. After beating Bakersfield on the road on Dec. 29 (5-4 SOW) in the first tilt of the year, the Barracuda have dropped the last three in a row against the Oilers top affiliate.
Tough Times: The Barracuda were dealt their ninth consecutive loss on Sunday afternoon in Loveland, going 0-3-2-0 on the road trip. The current winless streak is the longest since the club dropped 15 in a row (0-13-2-0) to close out the 2022-23 season.
Major Movement: The Barracuda acquired forward Jordy Bellerive from the Lehigh Valley Phantoms on Tuesday for future considerations. The hard-working forward, who’s in his fifth season of pro, will help an SJ penalty kill that ranks 31st in the league. In addition, the Sharks assigned Scott Sabourin back to the AHL, and the Barracuda recalled defenseman Gannon Laroque from the Wichita Thunder. The team also released forwards Mitchell Fossier and Ty Pelton-Byce from their PTOs. Sabourin, who appeared in three games with the Sharks during his recall, ranks first on the Barracuda in power-play goals (4), game-winning goals (3), penalty minutes (92), and majors (6).
Condors Check: Bakersfield enters Wednesday having won its last three in a row and have points in 12 of its last 13 (10-1-1-1). The Condors are eighth in the Pacific Division in points (18-11-1-2, 39 pts.), but boast the Division’s fourth-best winning percentage (.609), having played a league-low 32 games. Bako has won its last two on the road and are 7-3 in their last 10 on visiting ice. Veteran Jack Campbell has picked up victories in his last four after making 27 saves on 29 Reign shots on Sunday in Ontario. Campbell has allowed just two goals in each win and is 7-2 over his last nine games played.
Powering Up: Bakersfield went four-for-six on the power play en route to a 6-2 win at Ontario on Sunday and have now scored six power-play goals in its last two games. The Condors ranks sixth in the league on the advantage (21%), going six-for-18 (33.3%) against the Barracuda this season while up a man.
A Star is Born: Danil Gushchin, who extended his point streak to five games on Sunday (1+5=6), was named the Barracuda’s representative for the 2024 AHL All-Star Classic presented by Tech CU earlier this month. The two-day event will be held at Tech CU Arena in San Jose on Feb. 4-5, 2024. The second-year pro, is first on the Barracuda in points (35), goals (13), assists (22), and shots (139). Gushchin joins Thomas Bordeleau, Joachim Blichfeld, Jake Middleton, Francis Perron, Josef Korenar, Barclay Goodrow, Ryan Carpenter, Troy Grosenick, Danny O’Regan, Antoine Bibeau, and Rudolfs Balcers as players to represent the Barracuda at the AHL All-Star Classic.
