Home is Henderson: The Barracuda kick off a two-game set at the Henderson Silver Knights on Wednesday. A year ago, the Barracuda went 3-3-2-0 versus the Knights and 1-2-1-0 at the Lee’s Family Forum. All-time the Barracuda are 12-16-2-2 versus the Golden Knights affiliate and 3-11-1-1 in Las Vegas/Henderson.
Sunday Funday: The Barracuda netted a season-high seven goals on Sunday, including six tallies during five-on-five play, en-route to a 7-3 win over the Iowa Wild. In the victory, seven different skaters notched a goal and Georgi Romanov made 36 saves for his first win of the year. The Barracuda’s five-goal second period matched the most in a single period in franchise history. Additionally, the Barracuda set franchise watermarks for the fastest four goals (2:40) and the fastest five goals (4:44).
Killin’ It: The Barracuda have begun the season a perfect 19-for-19 on the penalty kill after killing off all three of Iowa’s power plays on Sunday. In addition, the Barracuda have power-play goals in three of the first four games (4/15=26.7%).
Rookie Arrivals: Barracuda rookies Filip Bystedt (2+3=5), Colin Graf (2+2=4), Kasper Halttunen (2+1=3), Jake Furlong (0+3=3), Luca Cagnoni (2+2=4), and Donavan Houle (2+3=5) have combined for 24 of the team’s 48 points this season. Bystedt now has 12 points (6+6=12) through his first 11 games in the AHL and has points in all four games this season.
Barracuda Brick: Yaroslav Askarov recorded his second consecutive shutout on Saturday, turning aside all 26 Wild shots he faced en-route to a 5-0 dub. The 22-year-old, who was selected 11th overall in 2020 by the Predators, was acquired by the Sharks from Nashville in August as part of a blockbuster trade. Askarov has begun the year by making 48 consecutive stops in 120 minutes of action and now has 11 career AHL shutouts. He is just the third goaltender in Barracuda franchise history to record back-to-back shutouts and the first since 2019 (Josef Korenar – 10/26/19 and 10/30/19). Last season, in Milwaukee with the Admirals, he finished second in the league with 30 wins, just one behind Tucson's Matt Villalta. He was also ranked second in shutouts (6) and fifth in goals-against average (2.39). Askarov won 14 games in a row at one point last year, as he and former Sharks' prospect Troy Grosenick backstopped Milwaukee to a 19-game winning streak.
“Checking Line”: The combination of Anthony Vincent, Lucas Vanroboys, and Donovan Houle has produced five of the team’s first 20 goals. Houle co-leads the Barracuda with five points (2+3=5) and two goals. All three players were signed out of the NCAA ranks as undrafted free agents over the last two years and despite having just 56 combined games of AHL/pro experience between the three, the trio is still seasoned having played a combined 397 games at the NCAA level over a combined 13 seasons.
