FOUR-GOAL THIRD DOOMS SAN JOSE IN ONTARIO
Jan 21, 2017
Ontario, CA - The San Jose Barracuda (19-11-1-3) allowed four third-period goals and fell to the Ontario Reign (20-9-6-0), 7-2, on Saturday night at Citizens Business Bank Arena.
After failing to score on the first power play of the game, Ontario's Sam Herr (5) collected a shot that redirected off the end boards and snuck the puck just inside the left post as Mantas Armalis tried to squeeze off the sharp angle at 4:03. The Reign went up 2-0 and cashed in on their second man advantage as Paul LaDue (5) fired a wrist shot just inside the right post from the top of the right circle at 7:01. San Jose got on the board and cut the lead in half as John McCarthy (7) backhanded a loose puck in the crease through the five-hole of Jack Campbell at 13:05. Moments later after Ontario took a late hack on the glove of Armalis, Jacob Middleton and Herr dropped the mitts and exchange multiple blows before collectively tapping out from exhaustion.
In the second, Marcus Sorensen (12) was able to tie the game on a redirect at 8:33. The newest member of the Barracuda, Bryan Moore, merely scored his first goal in his first game with San Jose but Campbell denied the forward on a shorthanded breakaway. And Ontario regained its lead on that power play as Johnny Brodzinski (11) went short side as he streaked down the right wing at 13:47.
In the third, the Reign exploded for four more goals and put the game well out of reach. After T.J. Hensick's pass from below the goal line had deflected off Rourke Chartier skates, Teddy Purcell (5) took the loose puck and beat Armalis at 4:40. Vincent LoVerde (5) extended Ontario's lead at 6:25 as he pinched from the right point and snuck through the defense to give Ontario a 5-2 lead. Brodzinski (12) netted his second goal of the game short side at 6:52 and Mike Amadio (7) capped off the four-goal third as collected another fortuitous bounce and went around Armalis in the crease before putting it over the netminder's pad.
Armalis (10-3-2) suffered the loss after allowing seven goals on 33 shots while Campbell (17-6-3) earned the win after making 24 saves on 26 shots.
