Down To Final Weekend

Final Weekend Will Decide Playoff Fate For Barracuda

Apr 12, 2016

Look Back:
The San Jose Barracuda (30-25-8-3, 71pts, .538%) presented  by Barracuda Networks chomped three out of a possible six points (1-1-1-0) in three  road games last week.  The Barracuda dropped a 4-3 overtime decision in  San Antonio on Apr 6 followed by the first road shutout of the season in a 3-0  win in Texas vs. the Stars on April 6.  San Jose gave up a season high  eight goals in an 8-5 loss in Texas on Apr 9 and are now currently 1-3-1-0 on  their six game road trip which ends on Saturday in Stockton.  The  Barracuda have just two games remaining on their regular season schedule (at  Stockton on Saturday, host Stockton on Sunday) and look to leapfrog past the  Charlotte checkers for the 8th and final playoff spot in the Western  Conference.

San Jose is currently in 4th place in the Pacific  Division with a .538 winning percentage and currently .003 percentage points  behind the Charlotte Checkers for the final playoff spot in the Western  Conference.  If the 5th place team in the Central Division has  a better winning percentage than the 4th place team in the Pacific –  there would be a cross-over between the two divisions. (that is currently the  case as the 5th place Checkers in the Central have a better winning  percentage than the 4th place Barracuda in the Pacific). Both the  Checkers and the Barracuda have two games remaining – San Jose needs to get one  more point than the Checkers get in the final two games of the season to make  the playoffs. The Barracuda will know by Saturday morning if they have a chance  to make the Calder Cup playoffs as Charlotte plays in Lake Erie on Thursday and  Friday. Please click HERE for the AHL’s playoff primer.

Head coach and Bay Area native Roy Sommer picked up  record breaking win #637 in the 4-2 win over the Ontario Reign at SAP Center on  Feb 10.  The victory surpassed Fred “Bun” Cook (636 wins) on top of  the AHL wins leader board.  The SJ Sharks honored coach Sommer with a  pregame ceremony before the Sharks and Coyotes game on Feb 13 – watch the  ceremony HERE.   Roy currently has 648 wins in the AHL.

It was a rather slow week in regards to transactions. Mirco Mueller was recalled by the Sharks after the game on Apr 9 but  was returned to the Barracuda on Apr 11.

Highlights on the ice last week included forward Ryan  Carpenter racking up points in all three games (2-2-4) and currently rides  an eight game point streak into the final weekend of the season.  Captain Bryan  Lerg hit the 20 goal plateau on Apr 6 in San Antonio and now rides a three  game point streak (3-1-4).  John McCarthy picked up five points  (1-4-5) while Barclay Goodrow added four (1-3-4) in three games last  week.  Aaron Dell pitched the first road shutout in franchise  history with 33 saves in Texas on Apr 8 and Julius Bergman scored his  first professional power play goal on Apr 8.  Gus Young tied a  season high with 19 penalty minutes on Apr 8 at Texas as the Barracuda set a  franchise record with 39 penalty minutes in that game.

The San Jose Barracuda player of the week nominee is captain Bryan Lerg.  The 30-year-old from Livonia, Michigan recorded four  points (3-1-4) and ten shots in three games last week and currently leads the  club with 21 goals scored this season.
