Jan 22, 2019The week that was: The Barracuda wrapped up their five-game home stand on Sunday against the Bakersfield Condors, falling 6-5 in overtime. In the loss, San Jose twice erased two-goal deficits including trailing 5-3 in the third period with six minutes remaining in regulation. During the home stand, San Jose amassed a 3-1-1-0 record and are now 13-4-1-1 (.737) on home ice this season which is the second-best home record in the Western Conference.
No More Monkeys: In San Jose’s loss on Sunday, Cavan Fitzgerald (2) and Jerermy Roy (3) each snapped long goalless droughts. For Fitzgerald, the sophomore defender had not tallied since October 6 (31 games) and it had been since November 5 (17 games) for Roy. San Jose’s first four goals game via the blueline on Sunday.

Powering Up: With Fitzgerald’s power-play strike on Sunday, San Jose has now scored on the man-advantage in four-straight games for the second time this season. In addition to a recently improved power play, the Barracuda rank sixth overall (83.9%) in on the penalty kill this season.
Frenemies: On Friday and Saturday, the San Jose Barracuda and Grand Rapids Griffins square off for the first time in 2018-19 and the first two meetings on the four-game season series. The Barracuda and Griffins have met up in the regular season in each of the last three years and collided in the Western Conference Finals two years ago. San Jose is 2-1-0-1 all-time against the Red Wings affiliate and 1-0-0-1 at Van Andel Arena. The Barracuda are 4-0 against the Central Division this season and 20-10-2-0 all-time.
Two-Headed Monster: San Jose’s goalie combo of Josef Korenar and Antoine Bibeau have combined for the AHL’s best goals-against average (2.47) and save percentage (.914). The 20-year-old rookie Korenar ranks second in the AHL in GAA (2.22), sixth in SV% (.919), T-fourth in wins (14), and T-fourth in shutouts (2). Bibeau is T-11th in the league in GAA (2.63) and 12th in save percentage (.912).
Hey Now, You’re an All-Star: The San Jose Barracuda will be well represented at the 2019 AHL All-Star Classic in Springfield, MA on January 28-29. Head Coach Roy Sommer will be the Pacific Division’s coaching reprenitive since San Jose finished with the Division’s best record on January 1. In addition, Assistant Captain Jake Middleton, forward Francis Perron and goaltender Josef Korenar will also be repping teal at the 2019 Classic.
