BARRACUDA TOSSED BY TEXAS, 7-2

Apr 2, 2023

Cedar Park, TX – The San Jose Barracuda (28-33-1-4) played with a depleted lineup falling to the Texas Stars (36-18-9-3) on Saturday night at the H-E-B Center, 7-2.

The first period saw a penalty 3:05 in as Barracuda defenseman Derrick Pouliot would sit for slashing and the Stars would take full advantage of the opportunity. Just 11 seconds into their first power play of the night Marian Studenic (18) would tip one into the net behind Aaron Dell. With the second power play of the game, the Stars would add another as Mavrik Bourque (14) would display a bit of patience to beat Dell’s right side to put the home team up 2-0 10:54 into the opening frame. Antonio Stranges (4) would make the Texas power play a perfect 3-for-3, picking up a quick pass from Stars captain Curtis McKenzie and following with an even quicker shot at the 12:14 mark. The Barracuda would get on the board thanks to rookie forward Tristen Robins (17) on the first San Jose power play of the night, getting one through Remi Poirier’s glove side. With another power play opportunity late in the period, the Barracuda would give one up shorthanded as Riley Tufte (16) would snap one home from the inside the crease.

In the second, the Barracuda would see an almost-goal from defenseman (playing as a forward) Will Riedell 4:30 into the period, but after review, the initial no-goal call on the ice would stand. The first goal of the period would instead go to Rhett Gardner as he would net one short side after winning a foot race to the puck, ending Dell’s night 9:01 into the period. Ryan Shea would have the first shot on Strauss Mann, beating the Barracuda netminder going five-hole for the sixth Texas goal of the evening. Thomas Harley (10) would catch Mann out of the crease and pick up the seventh Stars goal of the game.

Finding a bit of a stride in the third period, the Barracuda would fend off any more Stars goals, but see just one goal off the stick of Adam Raska (4) in his 100th American Hockey League game. Raska’s goal would come 8:42 into the period, cleaning up a shot in front of Poirier.

Dell and Mann would combine for 27 saves on 34 Texas shots in the loss while Poirier would stop 26-of-28 in the Stars' net.
