Barracuda Riding Season High Six Game Point Streak

Look Back:
The San Jose Barracuda (16-10-3-3, 38pts, .594%) presented by Barracuda Networks chomped five out of a possible six points last week (2-0-1-0) in three games to swim into 2nd place in the Pacific Division.  The Barracuda began the week with an exciting 4-3 come from behind overtime thriller vs. the Stockton Heat on Jan 6 followed by a 6-4 victory over the visiting San Antonio Rampage on Jan 9.  San Jose dropped a 1-0 overtime decision to the Rampage on Jan 10 to close out the four game home stand with a 3-0-1-0 record. The Barracuda hold a playoff position with the 2nd spot in the Pacific and are now 13-4-3-2 in their last 22 games overall.  With the two wins last week, Head coach Roy Sommer picked up wins #632 and #633, trailing only Fred “Bun” Cook (636 wins) for the most wins in AHL history

A number of transactions occurred in a very busy week for the Barracuda on and off the ice.  Alex Stalock was loaned to the Barracuda on a conditioning assignment on Jan 2 and went 2-0-0 with the Barracuda with a 1.96 GAA and a .930 save % before he was recalled by the Sharks after his 80th AHL victory on Jan 6. Chris Tierney was loaned to the Barracuda on Jan 2 and recorded three points (1-2-3) for the Barracuda in two games before he was recalled on Jan 7.  Goaltender Troy Grosenick was recalled by the Sharks on Jan 2 and returned to the Barracuda on Jan 7 after practicing with the Sharks for three days and Scott Timmins returned to the lineup on Jan 9 after missing 12 games with a leg injury.

Barclay Goodrow was named to the 2016 AHL All Star Classic and he added three points (2-1-3) last week and leads the club with 14 goals. Nikolay Goldobin (2-1-3), Jeremy Langlois (0-3-3), Ryan Carpenter (1-2-3), and John McCarthy (1-2-3) all added three points last week for the Barracuda.  Goaltenders Alex Stalock (32 SVS, W), Troy Grosenick (24 SVS, W), and Aaron Dell (26 SVS, OTL) all got a start last week in net and Micheal Haley led all skaters with four points (2-2-4) in the three games.  Rookie Alex Gallant picked up his team leading 6th fighting major in a fight of the year candidate on Jan 9 vs. Daniel Maggio as the Barracuda improved their overall home record to 10-7-1-1 at the SAP Center this season.

The San Jose Barracuda player of the week nominee is forward John McCarthy.  The 29-year-old from Andover, MA recorded three points (1-2-3) and was +2, in three games with the Barracuda last week to lead the way.

COMING UP:
The San Jose Barracuda begin a stretch where they play nine of their next 11 games on the road which starts with three road games this week!

On Wednesday, the Barracuda visit the San Diego Gulls at 7:05pm. Coverage begins at 7pm on AM 1220 KDOW.

On Friday, the Barracuda battle the IceHogs in Rockford, IL at 5pm.  The game will air on a tape delay beginning at 8pm on AM 1220 KDOW.

On Saturday, the Barracuda play the Wild in Des Moines, IA at 5pm.  The game will air on a tape delay beginning at 6pm on AM 1220 KDOW.

MILESTONE ALERT:
Head Coach Roy Sommer (633 wins) surpassed Frank Mathers (1256 games coached) for the most games coached in AHL history on March 26, 2014 in the Sharks 5-3 win in Lewiston, ME over the Portland Pirates.  Coach Sommer has coached 1373 AHL games – all with the SJ Sharks AHL affiliates. In total, Coach Sommer has been a head coach in 1,707 games in the AHL and ECHL.  Coach Sommer picked up his 600th career AHL win in a 4-3 victory in Lehigh Valley on Feb 4, 2015 and surpassed Frank Mathers (610 wins) for 2nd all-time in AHL history on March 27 in Springfield with his 611th win!  Roy needs 3 wins to tie Fred “Bun Cook” (636 wins) for the most wins in AHL history!

The San Jose Barracuda (15-10-2-3, 35pts) presented by Barracuda Networks won their season high fourth straight game with a come from behind 4-3 overtime victory over the visiting Stockton Heat (12-14-1-2, 27pts) in front of 3,290 fans at the SAP Center on Wednesday evening.  Head coach Roy Sommer picked up win #632, trailing only Fred “Bun” Cook (636 wins) for the most wins in AHL history and goaltender Alex Stalock (2-0-0) made his second straight start with the Barracuda as he made 32 saves for his 80th AHL win of his career.  John McCarthy, Chris Tierney, and Barclay Goodrow scored in regulation for San Jose while Nikolay Goldobin won the game in overtime at 3:09 with a rebound scored.  The Barracuda trailed 3-1 headed into the third period as Morgan Klimchuk, Kenny Agostino, and Derek Grant gave Stockton the early lead as goaltender Kevin Poulin made 32 saves in net in the loss.

1.9.16 – San Antonio 4 – San Jose 6 – W – SAP Center – San Jose, CA
The San Jose Barracuda (16-10-2-3, 37pts) presented by Barracuda Networks won their season high fifth straight game with a 6-4 victory over the visiting San Antonio Rampage (15-14-7-0, 37pts) in front of 6,958 fans at the SAP Center on Saturday evening.   Head coach Roy Sommer picked up win #633, trailing only Fred “Bun” Cook (636 wins) for the most wins in AHL history and goaltender Troy Grosenick (8-4-3) made 24 saves in his return to the Barracuda.  Micheal Haley (2-1-3), Ryan Carpenter (1-1-2), Nikolay Goldobin (1-1-2), Barclay Goodrow (1-1-2), and Bryan Lerg (1-0-1) all scored for the Barracuda.  John McCarthy (0-2-2), Trevor Parkes (0-2-2), Nikita Jevpalovs (0-1-1), Julius Bergman (0-1-1), and Jeremy Langlois (0-1-1) all added assists in the win.  Roman Will made 19 saves, and Spencer Martin made 6 saves in relief for the Rampage with Chris Bigras (1-0-1), Nikita Zadorov (1-0-1), Sam Henley (1-0-1) and Mat Clark (1-0-1) each scoring for the Rampage. 

1.10.16 – San Antonio 1 – San Jose 0 – OTL– SAP Center – San Jose, CA
The San Jose Barracuda (16-10-3-3, 38pts) presented by Barracuda Networks extended their point streak to a season high six games (5-0-1-0) but dropped a 1-0 overtime decision to the visiting San Antonio Rampage (16-14-7-0, 39pts) in front of 4,878 fans at the SAP Center on Sunday afternoon.  Goaltender Aaron Dell (6-6-3) was superb in net making 26 saves in the loss for the Barracuda.  Rookie Spencer Martin made 21 saves for his first AHL shutout for the Rampage with Reid Petryk scoring the game-winning goal at 3:12 of the overtime frame.

*1257 GAMES…..With the 5-3 win in Lewiston, ME vs. the Pirates on March 26, 2014, head coach Roy Sommer surpassed Frank Mathers (1,256 games) for the most games coached in the AHL.

*PT a game in AHL… forward Chris Tierney picked up two assists in his Barracuda debut on Jan 3.  Tierney now has 32 points (9-23-32) in 31 games in the AHL with Worcester and San Jose.

*Racking up PIMS… forward Alex Gallant has 61 penalty minutes in his last 10 games (8 minor, 7 majors, and a game misconduct).

*Piling up the goals… Barclay Goodrow leads the Barracuda with 14 goals in just 24 games this season.

*Quick strikes… the Barracuda scored four goals in a 3:20 span in the second period on Dec 20 in 5-4 win vs. Stockton.  San Jose scored three goals in :50 seconds to close out the goal scoring rush.

*What a weekend… the line of Goodrow/Carpenter/Emanuelsson combined for 18 (7-11-18) points in two games (Dec 4-5) for the Barracuda in back-to-back wins vs. the Heat and the Condors.  The line scored 7 of the 13 goals for the Barracuda.

*1st pro hat trick… Barclay Goodrow recorded his first professional hat trick in the Barracuda’s 7-6 overtime win over the Condors on Dec 6. Goodrow scored three tiebreaking goals, the last coming 23 seconds into overtime as San Jose defeated Bakersfield, 7-6. The hat trick was the first multiple-goal game of Goodrow’s professional career, and gave him seven points in a span of less than 21 hours. 

*1st pro hat trick X2…. Nikolay Goldobin scored three goals, added an assist, and was +4 in the Barracuda’s 5-1 win over the Texas Stars on Jan 3, 2016.

*Plus Player… Ryan Carpenter registered an AHL season high +5 in San Jose’s 7-6OTW vs. Bakersfield on Dec 5.  Carpenter leads the Barracuda with a +19 rating this season.

*Monkey of the back…Petter Emanuelsson scored his first two goals of the season on Dec 5 in the 7-6OTW vs. the Condors.  The goals broke an 18 game goalless drought to start the season and were his first since Oct 24, 2014 vs. Syracuse.

*Lots of saves… goaltender Troy Grosenick made 49 saves in the 4-3SOL at Stockton on Nov 21. The 49 saves was a career high for Troy and the most saves by a goaltender this season in the AHL.

*Nice Record… Grosenick is 4-0-1 in his last five starts and 8-1-2 in his last 11 starts overall.

*Strange but true… the Barracuda are 0-3-0-1 vs. the Gulls at the SAP Center and have been outscored 4-14 in the process…meanwhile the Barracuda are 2-0-1-0 vs. the Gulls in San Diego with an 10-9 scoring edge.

*Cooling off the Heat… the Barracuda are 5-0-0-1 in four games vs. the Stockton Heat this season and hold a 26-16 scoring advantage.

*Situations...the Barracuda are….

*Teddy Bear Toss… Hundreds of teddy bears hit the ice on the first teddy bear toss game presented by Kaiser Permanente on Nov 7.  Barclay Goodrow scored the first Barracuda goal of the game at 18:37 of the second period in San Jose’s 3-2 loss to the Gulls.  The teddy bears were donated to local charities last week.

*Doubleheaders… the first of 13 Sharks/Barracuda doubleheaders at the SAP Center occurred on Saturday, Nov 7.  The Barracuda fell to the SD Gulls (AHL affiliate of the Anaheim Ducks) 3-2 at 1:15pm while the Sharks dropped a 1-0 game to the Ducks at 7:30pm.   • Frazer McLaren picked up the first fighting major in Barracuda history with a 2nd period scrap vs. Mike Liambas on Oct 9.
  • The San Jose Barracuda picked up their first win in franchise history in a 4-1 victory over the Heat in Stockton on Oct 15.

*Nikolay Goldobin became the first SJ Barracuda player to receive an NHL recall on Oct 15 and scored his 1st NHL goal in his 2nd NHL game in the Sharks 6-3 loss at the NY Islanders on Oct 17.

*OT penalty shot… goaltender Troy Grosenick stopped Gulls defenseman Brandon Montour at 1:05 of the overtime period in the Barracuda’s 4-3 shootout win at San Diego on Nov 13.

*2 Penalty Shots, 1 period…referee Garrett Rank awarded two penalty shots in the 1st period of the Barracuda’s 3-2 loss to the Stars on Nov 29. Troy Grosenick stopped Curtis MacKenzie at 10:52 while John Muse stopped Jeremy Langlois at 14:53.

*Score first… the Barracuda have scored FIRST 13 times in 32 games this season (8-2-2-1). – Carpenter 1, Haley 2, Lerg 1, McCarthy 2, Langlois 2, Hanson 1, Parkes 2, Stollery  1, Goldobin 1.

*Memorial Cups…defenseman Mark Cundari and forward Scott Timmins each won a pair of Memorial Cups in 2009 and 2010 with the Windsor Spitfires (OHL). Vincent Arseneau won the Cup with the Shawinigan Cataractes in 2012.

*Swedish Elite League Championship…. both Melker Karlsson and Petter Emanuelsson won back-to-back championships with Skelleftea AIK in the SWEHL in 2013 and 2014.

*Kelly Cup Champions… Chris Crane, Vincent Arseneau, and Greger Hanson each won the Kelly Cup (ECHL Championship) with the Allen Americans last season.

*CHL Championship… Aaron Dell and Greger Hanson won the Central Hockey League Championship with the Allen Americans in 2013.

*Spengler Cup… defenseman Mark Cundari won a gold medal at the 2016 Spengler Cup for Team Canada.

*Oldest/Youngest… Bryan Lerg is the oldest player on the Barracuda roster (born Jan 20, 1986) while Julius Bergman is the youngest (born Nov 2, 1995).

*Bros… Alex Gallant’s older brother Brett plays for the Lake Erie Monsters in the AHL.

*High scorer in the Q… rookie Nikita Jevpalovs recorded 100 points (49-51-100) in 64 games for Blainville-Boisbriand in the QMJHL last season. The 21-year-old from Riga, Latvia has eight points (2-6-8) in 32 games for the Barracuda.

*The Sherriff… Frazer McLaren re-signed in the off-season with the SJ Sharks organization after spending the last 2+ seasons in the Toronto organization. McLaren holds the Worcester Sharks franchise record with 577 penalty minutes and has 19 penalty minutes in 10 games for the Barracuda.

*J-Mac… John McCarthy led the Worcester Sharks in points (151) and goals (63) and was tied in the franchise lead in games played (277).  McCarthy also served as the Worcester Sharks captain in 2012-13 and was the Worcester Sharks MVP in 2011-12. McCarthy is (4-12-16) in 31 games with the Barracuda and (0-0-0) in one game with the SJ Sharks.
