Barracuda Playoff Series Shifts to Ontario Tied 1-1

The San Jose Barracuda presented by Barracuda Networks began their quest for the Calder Cup by splitting Games 1 and 2 at SAP Center vs. the Ontario Reign. In the first ever AHL Calder Cup playoff game played on California soil, the Ontario Reign (AHL affiliate of the LA Kings) defeated the Barracuda by the score of 2-1 in Game 1 at SAP Center on Apr 22. San Jose bounced back in Game 2 on Apr 23 with a 3-2 win over Ontario to even up the series 1-1. The Best of 5 Pacific Division Semifinals series now shifts to the Citizens Business Bank Arena for Games 3, 4 and 5 (if necessary).
San Jose finished in 4th place in the Pacific Division with a .537 winning percentage and battle the top seeded Ontario Reign (AHL affiliate of the LA Kings) in the Pacific Division Semifinals in a best of five series. As the top seed, the Ontario Reign elected to have the first two games of the series in San Jose before hosting games 3-5 in Ontario. Complete schedule here:

Matt Tennyson suited up for the Barracuda in Game 1 and then was recalled by the Sharks from his conditioning assignment on Apr 23. The Barracuda signed forward Gabryel Boudreau (Gatineau-QMJHL) to an ATO on Apr 21 and he made his professional debut in Game 2 vs. Ontario. Boudreau was originally drafted by the Sharks in 2013 with the 49th pick overall. In addition; forward Jordan Sims was released from his PTO on Apr 21 after playing in two games for the Barracuda (0-1-1).
Highlights on the ice last week include Nikita Jevpalovs and Nikolay Goldobin each scoring their first professional playoff goals. Ryan Carpenter and Bryan Lerg also scored for the Barracuda while Joakim Ryan added three assists. Goaltender Aaron Dell stopped 69 of 73 shots (.945%) in the first two games of the series and also added two assists from the crease.
The San Jose Barracuda player of the week nominee is goaltender Aaron Dell. The 26-year-old from Airdrie, Alberta stopped 69 of 73 shots on goal through the first two games of the series and also added two assists. Dell picked up his first Calder Cup playoff victory in the 3-2 win in Game 2 on Apr 23.

MILESTONE ALERT:
Head Coach Roy Sommer (1404 game coached) surpassed Frank Mathers (1256 games coached) for the most games coached in AHL history on March 26, 2014 in the Sharks 5-3 win in Lewiston, ME over the Portland Pirates. Coach Sommer has coached 1,412 AHL games – all with the SJ Sharks AHL affiliates. In total, Coach Sommer has been a head coach in 1,743 games in the AHL and ECHL. Coach Sommer picked up his 600th career AHL win in a 4-3 victory in Lehigh Valley on Feb 4, 2015 and surpassed Frank Mathers (610 wins) for 2nd all-time in AHL history on March 27 in Springfield with his 611th win! Roy (649 wins) surpassed Fred “Bun Cook” (636 wins) for the most wins in AHL history on Feb 10, 2016 with a 4-2 win vs. the Ontario Reign at SAP Center.
Few things to know….(from the regular season)
- The San Jose Barracuda finished in 4th place (31-26-8-3, 71pts, .537%) in the Pacific Division and 8th place overall in the Western Conference. – the Barracuda clinched a playoff spot on the final day of the AHL regular season (Apr 17)
- The San Jose Sharks currently have 11 players on their roster that have spent time in the Sharks AHL affiliate (Couture, Pavelski, Wingels, Braun, Haley, Vlasic, Nieto, Hertl, Tierney, Karlsson, and DeMelo).
- The San Jose Sharks finished in 3rd place in the Pacific Division and 6th place in the Western Conference with 98 points and a 46-30-6 record. The Sharks clinched a playoff spot on March 28 and defeated the LA Kings 4-1 in a best of seven Western Conference first round playoff series. – The Sharks await the winner of the Ducks/Predators series for Round 2.
- Captain Bryan Lerg had 51 points (21-30-51) in 64 AHL games this season for the Barracuda and has dressed in six games for the SJ Sharks (0-0-0) this season. Lerg was tied for the Barracuda with 21 goals and lead the club with 168 shots on goal.
- Ryan Carpenter (18-37-55) led the Barracuda in points (55) assists (37), and +/- (+20) in 66 games this season. The 55 points ranked 19th in AHL. Ryan was named the 2015-16 AHL Yanick Dupre Man Of The Year Award (league wide award) winner for all of the work he has done in the San Jose community this season. Carpenter made his NHL debut in the Sharks 2-0 loss to the Wild on Dec 12 and was named to the 2016 AHL All-Star Classic where he added an assist for the Pacific Division.
- Bryan Lerg, Mirco Mueller, Dylan DeMelo, Nikolay Goldobin, Melker Karlsson, Micheal Haley, John McCarthy, Barclay Goodrow, Ryan Carpenter, Ben Smith, Matt Tennyson, Chris Tierney, and Alex Stalock have all played for the Barracuda (AHL) and the Sharks (NHL) this season.
- Micheal Haley had eight fighting majors in 16 games with the SJ Sharks and had 23 points (12-11-23) in 41 games for the Barracuda. Haley scored his 1st NHL goal in 1814 days on March 5, 2016 vs Vancouver at SAP Center. – Haley is currently with the Sharks.
- Karl Stollery was 2nd among Barracuda defensemen in points (6-18-24) which includes 12 power play points (3-9-12) through 67 games.
- Rookie Joakim Ryan ranked 1st among Barracuda defensemen in points (2-26-28) through 66 games. – Ryan was named the SJ Barracuda Unsung Hero for the 2015-16 season.
- Rookie Nikolay Goldobin had 44 points (21-23-44) in 60 games for the Barracuda and two points (1-1-2) in nine games for the SJ Sharks. Goldobin ranked 13th among AHL rookies in points.
- Barclay Goodrow has 39 points (20-19-39) in 57 games for the Barracuda this season along with three points (0-3-3) in 14 games with the Sharks this season. Goodrow was named to the 2016 AHL All Star Classic where he added an assist for the Pacific Division.
- Goaltender Aaron Dell finished 17-16-6 this season with a 2.42 GAA and a .922 save %. Dell stopped 12 of 13 shooters in the shootout this season and made at the time an AHL high 50 saves in net on Feb 10 vs. Ontario. Dell ranked 8th in the AHL on GAA and 4th in save %. Dell received his 1st NHL recall on Feb 27 and was the backup goaltender for two games for the Sharks.
- Goaltender Troy Grosenick finished 11-10-4 this season with a 3.16 GAA and a .894 save %. Grosenick made at the time an AHL high 49 saves on Nov 21 in a 4-3SOL at Stockton.
- The San Jose Barracuda players wear the same jersey number with the SJ Sharks if they are to receive a NHL recall this season.
- The San Jose Barracuda went 21-19-5-3 vs. California teams this season.
- Score 4… the Barracuda went 24-2-1-0 when they score 4 goals in a game this season, but 7-24-7-3 when they score less than 4 goals.
- Coach Roy Sommer currently is 1st in the AHL with 649 wins in his career (18th season) and 1st in games coached in the AHL with 1412.

The San Jose Barracuda (#4 seed in Pacific) presented by Barracuda Networks lost Game 1 of the Best of 5 Pacific Division Semifinals series by the score of 2-1 to the visiting Ontario Reign (#1 seed in Pacific) in front 4,636 fans at SAP Center on Friday evening. Nikita Jevpalovs tied the score early in the third period while Aaron Dell made 35 saves in net in the loss. Kurtis MacDermid scored midway through the second period to put Ontario up 1-0 and Jonny Brodzinski scored the game winner at 15:57 of the third period for the Reign. Peter Budaj made 28 saves in net for the win.
GAME 2 4.23.16 – Ontario 2 – San Jose 3 – W – SAP Center – San Jose, CA
The San Jose Barracuda (#4 seed in Pacific) presented by Barracuda Networks defeated the visiting Ontario Reign (#1 seed in Pacific) by the score of 3-2 in front 4,995 fans at SAP Center on Saturday evening in Game 2 of the Best of 5 Pacific Division Semifinals. With the series now tied 1-1, the series will shift to the Citizens Business Bank Arena for Games three, four, and five if necessary.
Ryan Carpenter, Bryan Lerg, and Nikolay Goldobin each found the back of the net while Aaron Dell made 34 saves in net for the victory. Joakim Ryan added three assists from the blue line for San Jose as the Barracuda won their first ever playoff game. Kurtis MacDermid and Jonny Brodzinski scored for the Reign while Peter Budaj made 12 saves in net in the loss.
*PLAYOFF BITES:
*NHL/AHL affiliates to do battle... the Sharks faced the LA Kings in the 1st round of the Stanley Cup playoffs and defeated the Kings 4-1…..the Barracuda face the Ontario Reign in the 1st round of the Calder Cup playoffs. The Reign are the AHL affiliate of the LA Kings.

*Some history… The AHL affiliates for the SJ Sharks and LA Kings have met twice before in the Calder Cup playoffs in Worcester and Manchester. In 2010, the Manchester Monarchs defeated the Worcester Sharks 4-2 in the Division Final and the Monarchs also defeated the Worcester Sharks in the Division Semifinal 4-2 in 2007.
*Flashback…. John McCarthy and Frazer McLaren were each in the lineup in the Manchester Monarchs 2-1 overtime series clinching win vs. the Worcester Sharks on May 7, 2010. (Slava Voynov scored at 1:55 of OT with Alex Stalock and Jonathan Bernier in net). J-Mac and Fraz were the only two players to suit up in that game and in Game 1 in the Barracuda/Reign series.
*Ontario has experience…many of the players for the Ontario Reign won the Calder Cup last season as a member of the Manchester Monarchs. In fact, 15 players on the Ontario Reign roster were part of the 2015 Manchester Monarchs Calder Cup Champion team.

*BIG DEAL!... The American Hockey League announced that Ryan Carpenter was selected as the winner of the Yanick Dupre Memorial Award as the 2015-16 IOA/American Specialty AHL Man of the Year. This award has been presented annually since 1998 to an AHL player for his outstanding contributions to his local community and charitable organizations. The Yanick Dupre Memorial Award winner is selected by the AHL and representatives from IOA and American Specialty from among 30 individual team Man of the Year honorees. Carpenter hit the ground running in the Barracuda’s first season in San Jose, spearheading several initiatives and ensuring the organization’s positive and productive presence in the community which included teaching several Barracuda Math classes, running practices for the SJ Junior Sharks, multiple hospital visits, and serving the Bay Area Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

*Eight is enough…. The Barracuda allowed a season high eight goals in an 8-5 loss in Texas on Apr 9. It was the first time this season the Barracuda lost a game in regulation when scoring at least four goals in a game.
*Three amigos… Bryan Lerg (21 goals), Nikolay Goldobin (21), and Barclay Goodrow (20) all hit the 20 goal mark this season for the Barracuda. – SJ was one of nine teams that had at least three 20 goal scorers this season – Providence led the AHL with five.
*Raffi Watch… Raffi Torres played five games with the SJ Barracuda this season and did not register a point. Raffi Torres was traded On Feb 22 by the Sharks along with 2nd round draft picks in 2017 and 2018 for defenseman Roman Polak and forward Nick Spaling. Torres was reassigned by the Maple Leafs to the Barracuda on Feb 22 and is currently on the Barracuda roster. Torres announced on Feb 26 that he was not going to play the rest of the season. (heal injury)
*Streakers…. John McCarthy (2-6-8) has a six game point streak…. Trevor Parkes (3-2-5) and Jeremy Langlois (2-2-4) three games each….Petter Emanuelsson (2-0-2), Joakim Ryan (0-3-3), and Nikolay Goldobin (2-3-5) two games each.
*30 goal scorer added… the Barracuda received Jeremy Morin in the trade that saw Alex Stalock and Ben Smith go to Toronto on Feb 27. Morin had 30 goals with Rockford in 67 AHL games in 2012-13. The 24 year old from Auburn, NY has played in 82 games in the NHL with Chicago and Columbus. Morin had 14 points (5-9-14) in 18 games for the Barracuda so far since the trade.
*Cundari Loaned… defenseman Mark Cundari was reassigned to the Lake Erie Monsters on March 7. Cundari had eight points (3-5-8) in 34 games for the Barracuda.
*Good Barracuda…the Barracuda were not whistled for a single penalty in the 3-1 loss to the SD Gulls at SAP Center on March 27. The Gulls were whistled for 6 minor penalties in the game.
*Bad Barracuda…San Jose was whistled for a season high 39 penalty minutes on Apr 8 at Texas.
*PP Explosion… the Barracuda exploded for 4 power play goals in the 7-1 win over the Stockton Heat at SAP Center on March 1. San Jose went 4-7 with the man advantage and received power play goals from John McCarthy, Nikolay Goldobin X2, and Karl Stollery. In addition, Jeremy Langlois scored a shorthanded goal in the victory.
*Debut Winner…. Goaltender Joel Rumpel won his 1st AHL start with 22 saves in a 4-2 win vs. Bakersfield on March 6.
*League Leaders….
- Alex Gallant – 2nd among rookies in majors (14) and 4th among rookie in penalty minutes (122)
- Aaron Dell – 8th in GAA (2.42) and 4th in save % (.922%)

*1814 days….Micheal Haley scored his 1st NHL goal in 1814 days on March 5, 2016 vs the Vancouver Canucks at SAP Center. His last NHL goal was with the NY Islanders on March 19 2011 in Florida.
*All even… forward Trevor Parkes had 41 points this season (a career high in AHL) – not one of those points were scored on special teams.
*Nine Gamer… the Barracuda had a season high nine game point streak (7-0-2-0) from Dec 30 – Jan 16.
*Tale of two PK’s… the Barracuda had not allowed a power play goal in a season high seven straight games from Jan 3 – Jan 16 (17-for-17 on the kill) and had a penalty kill success rate of 87.1% (121-139) since Jan 3.
*PTO to AHL…Scott Timmins and Alex Gallant each began the seasons on PTO contracts before signing a SPC for the rest of the season. In addition, Alex Gallant signed an AHL deal for the Barracuda for the 2016-17 season as well.
*Welcome Back Al… goaltender Alex Stalock was loaned to the Barracuda on a conditioning assignment on Jan 2. Stalock had a 76-53-10 record with a 2.63 GAA and a .909 save percentage with the Worcester Sharks in the AHL. Al made 21 saves in a 5-1 win over the Texas Stars on Jan 3 in his first AHL start since April 20, 2013 at Syracuse. Stalock picked up his 80th AHL win on Jan 6 and as recalled by the Sharks on Jan 7 after posting a 2-0-0 record with the Barracuda along with a 1.96 GAA and a .930 save %. Stalock was traded to Toronto at the NHL trade deadline.
*PT a game in AHL… forward Chris Tierney picked up two assists in his Barracuda debut on Jan 3. Tierney now has 32 points (9-23-32) in 31 games in the AHL with Worcester and San Jose.
*Racking up PIMS… forward Alex Gallant ha6 122 penalty minutes in just 27 games (16 minors, 14 majors, a ten minute misconduct, and a game misconduct).

The hat trick was the first multiple-goal game of Goodrow’s professional career, and gave him seven points in a span of less than 21 hours.

*The Barracuda added two new players to the roster in late March as Jon Martin (#71) and Mike Brodzinski (#75) each made their professional debuts for the Barracuda on March 26. Jon Martin signed an entry level contract with the San Jose Sharks on March 2. Martin, 20, led the Swift Current Broncos with 69 points (38 goals, 31 assists) and posted 74 penalty minutes (two fighting majors) in 66 games in the Western Hockey League (WHL) this season. He ranked 9th in the league in goals and was named the WHL's Player of the Week for the week ending Oct. 18. He has posted career highs in goals, assists and points this season as Swift Current's captain. Mike Brodzinski signed an ATO with the San Jose Barracuda on 3/26 after playing three seasons with the U. of Minnesota. Brodzinski, 20, finished his junior season ranking 1st among University of Minnesota defensemen in points (21), goals (8) and assists (8) in 37 games. His 11 power-play points ranked 1st on the team, and he set a career highs in goals, assists, points, penalty minutes and games played, while being named to the Big Ten Second All-Star Team this season. Other accolades in his third year with Minnesota include being named the Big Ten Second Star of the Week (Oct. 27), being named to the Mariucci Classic All-Tournament Team, becoming the first Big Ten defenseman to tally a hat trick (Jan. 23), and became just the second defenseman in league history to be named the first star of the week (Jan. 26).
*High scorer in the Q… rookie Nikita Jevpalovs recorded 100 points (49-51-100) in 64 games for Blainville-Boisbriand in the QMJHL last season. The 21-year-old from Riga, Latvia had 14 points (5-9-14) in 60 games for the Barracuda and six points (1-5-6) in five games for the Allen Americans.
*The Sherriff… Frazer McLaren re-signed in the off-season with the SJ Sharks organization after spending the last 2+ seasons in the Toronto organization. McLaren holds the Worcester Sharks franchise record with 577 penalty minutes and had 23 penalty minutes in 14 games for the Barracuda.
*J-Mac… John McCarthy led the Worcester Sharks in points (151) and goals (63) and was tied in the franchise lead in games played (277). McCarthy also served as the Worcester Sharks captain in 2012-13 and was the Worcester Sharks MVP in 2011-12. McCarthy was (16-29-45) in 67 games with the Barracuda and (0-0-0) in one game with the SJ Sharks.
*Career High… forward Trevor Parkes set a career AHL high in points this season. Parkes had 41 points (18-23-41) in 68 games for the Barracuda surpassing his previous high of 9 points in 2012-13, 2013-14, and 2014-15.
*No sophomore slump… 2nd year pro Ryan Carpenter surpassed his point totals from last season (74gp, 12-22-34pts). Carpy had 55 points (18-37-55) in 66 games this season for the Barracuda.
