Jan 19, 2018
SAN DIEGO, CA - On Friday night, the San Jose Barracuda (18-16-0-2) held off the San Diego Gulls' (20-16-1-0) final-period push to earn its first regular-season regulation win, 3-2, at Valley View Casino Center since November 14, 2015.
In the first, Radim Simek (3) snapped a 23-game goalless drought and opened up the scoring by banging home a loose puck from point-blank range at 8:15. San Jose would go on to outshoot the Gulls 18-to-8 in the period, but the score remained 1-0 through one.
In the second, down a man, Danny O'Regan stole a puck in his end, raced down the ice, peeled from pressure and passed the puck to a trailing Simek who fired a shot on net and Marcus Sorensen (6) cashed in on the rebound at 8:49. San Jose would go three-for-three on the PK in the period to keep its lead at 2-0 after 40 minutes.
In the third, Kevin Roy (7) erased Antoine Bibeau's shutout-bid at 3:26 and then tied the game at 2-2 with his second of the night and eighth of the season as he poked in a loose puck in the crease on the power play at 5:22. But less than 30 seconds later, Brian Cooperturned the puck over in his own, and Brandon Mashinter (7) fired a spinning slapper past Reto Berra to give San Jose its lead back in what would turn out to be the winner.
Bibeau collected his third-straight win by making 26 saves, while Berra earned the loss after allowing three goals on 46 shots.
