SAN JOSE - With the 9th overall selection in the 2014 NHL Draft, San Jose Sharks General Manager Doug Wilson and Director of Scouting Tim Burke selected right wing Timo Meier (TEE-moh MIGHR).

The 18-year-old Meier spent last season with the Halifax Mooseheads of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL). Meier registered 90 points (44-46=90) in 61 regular season games with Halifax last season, ranking T-5th in goals (44), T-19th in assists (46), and T-11th in points (90) amongst all players in the QMJHL.

He was named to the QMJHL's Second All-Star Team as well as being awarded with the 2015 Michael Bossy Trophy, given to the QMJHL player judged to be the best professional prospect.

In addition, Meier put together an extensive 27-game point streak from Nov. 22 to Feb. 26, compiling 51 points (28-23=51) during that span. The 27-game run tied for the second-longest point streak in the CHL during the entire 2014-15 season.

"Timo is an accomplished goal scorer who had an excellent season in Halifax last year," Director of Scouting Tim Burke said. "A strong body, good skater, and versatile player.  We were very excited to take him with the 9th overall pick."

The six-foot-one, 210-pound native of Herisau, Switzerland also has an extensive international career, representing his home country in 66 international games since 2011-12, including the 2015 World Junior Championship. In that tournament, he collected six points (2-4-6) and a plus-2 rating in six games.

Meier was ranked 10th among North American Skaters by NHL Central Scouting coming into the draft.
