Gull Setting: Riding a three-game winning streak, the Barracuda host the San Diego Gulls (Anaheim Ducks) on Wednesday night at Tech CU Arena as they continue their five-game homestand. The Barracuda are 1-0 against the Gulls this season, picking up a 2-1 win on Nov. 13. Dating back to the 2022-23 season, the Barracuda are 6-0-0-1 against the Ducks’ affiliate in the last seven games. The Barracuda will make their first visit to San Diego next Saturday, Dec. 14. The two clubs are scheduled to face each other eight times on the season series.

 

Barracuda Boiling: The Barracuda matched a season-high with seven goals on Saturday night versus the Abbotsford Canucks en-route to a 7-4 win. In the victory, the Barracuda potted a season-high four power-play goals. It was the first time the Cuda had scored four power-play goals since Feb. 17, 2024, at Bakersfield (7-3 W). In the win, seven different Barracuda skaters recorded multiple points, including Collin Graf who collected three assists, and Luca Cagnoni who scored twice on the power play. Gabe Carriere made 25 saves to improve to 2-0 on the season and 3-0 in his career in the AHL. The backstop also picked up an assist on Poturalski’s power-play goal, the first helper of his career.

 

Last Meeting: In the last matchup against the Gulls, Yaroslav Askarov made a career-high 48 saves and Thomas Bordeleau notched a pair of goals as the Barracuda picked up a 2-1 win at Tech CU Arena. All three goals scored in the game came on the power play.

 

Home Sweet Home: The Barracuda made it three wins in a row at home on Saturday after a 7-4 victory over the Abbotsford Canucks and are now tied with the Grand Rapids Griffins for the best home record in the Western Conference (8-2-0-0, .800%). The Barracuda are a +17 at home this season. A year ago, San Jose did not win their eighth game at home until Jan. 24 (22 games).

 

Eye Eye Captain: The Barracuda named Jimmy Schuldt the club’s sixth captain in franchise history last week. Schuldt, 29, is in his first season with the Barracuda after helping guide the Coachella Valley Firebirds to back-to-back Calder Cup Finals. The sixth-year pro was originally signed as an undrafted free agent by the Vegas Golden Knights on April 4, 2019. Prior to turning pro, the rearguard spent four years at St. Cloud State, serving as the team’s captain for three of the four seasons. Andrew Poturalski, Lucas Carlsson, Colin White, and Scott Sabourin were named alternate captains. Schuldt recorded a career-high three assists on Friday in the win over Abbotsford.

 

Ask & You Shall Receive: The Sharks reassigned prized goalie prospect Yaroslav Askarov to the Barracuda last Tuesday. Askarov went 1-0-1 in two games during his recall, posting a 1.96 GAA and a .926 SV%. The Omsk, Russia, native earned his first win as a Shark on Nov. 25 against the LA Kings, 7-2, as he made 22 saves. Among AHL goalies, the 22-year-old ranks T-second in shutouts (2), third in save percentage (.937), fourth in goals-against average (2.02), and T-fifth in wins (7). Askarov was named the AHL’s Goalie of the Month in October after going 5-0 with a pair of shutouts. The former 11th overall pick by the Nashville Predators was traded to the Sharks on August 23, 2024, in exchange for forward David Edstrom, a 2025 conditional first-round pick, and goaltender Magnus Chrona.

 

Collin Cookin’: Collin Graf collected three assists on Saturday and now ranks T-second in the AHL in assists (17) and T-third in scoring (22). Among rookies, he is first in helpers, T-first in points, and T-second in power-play assists (7). Graf now has six multi-point games this season, including a pair of three-assist efforts.

 

Hot Pot: Andrew Poturalski collected a goal and an assist on Saturday, his team-leading seventh multi-point game of the year. Poturalksi is now T-sixth in the AHL in points (19) and goals (8) and T-third in power-play goals (4). Among Barracuda skaters, he is first in goals and power-play goals, second in points, and T-second in assists. The veteran spent two seasons with the Gulls from 2019-21, totaling 50 (11+39=50) points in 61 games. As a member of SD in 2020-21, he led the AHL in points (43) and assists (34) during the shortened COVID season.

 

Do the Cagn Cagn: Luca Cagnoni scored twice on the power play on Saturday and now ranks T-third in the league in power-play points (10), T-fourth in power-play assists (7), T-fifth in power-play goals (3) and T-seventh in goals (7) and points (18). Among league defensemen, he is T-first in goals, T-second in power-play goals, second in power-play points, T-second in points, and T-third in power-play assists.
