Going back-to-back: After a 6-4 loss to the Ontario Reign on Wednesday at Tech CU Arena, the Barracuda travel to the Toyota Arena on Saturday for the second game of a home and home against LA’s top affiliate.  Since shutting out the Reign 5-0 in the season opener on Oct. 12, the Barracuda have dropped the last three matchups and are 1-2-0-1 on the year.

 

Wednesday Woes: The Barracuda fell behind 6-1 after 40 minutes at home on Wednesday versus the Reign before scoring three times in the third in a 6-4 loss. The Barracuda matched a season-high in goals against for a game (6), goals against in a period (3), and power-play goals against (3). Netminder Yaroslav Askarov left the first period with a lower-body injury after allowing three goals on 14 shots. In the loss, the Barracuda went three-for-six on the power play, three-for-six on the penalty kill, and got goals from Andrew Poturalski, Danil Gushchin, Tristen Robins, and Luca Cagnoni.

       

Hot Pot: All-Star Andrew Poturalski scored his 20th goal of the year on Wednesday, reaching 20 goals for the fourth time in his career, and now leads the AHL with 49 points. Additionally, he is T-third in power-play goals (9), T-fourth in assists (29), and power-play points (19), and T-sixth in goals and power-play assists (10).

 

Reign Report: The Reign have won four in a row entering Saturday, and are T-first in the AHL’s Pacific Division with 63 points. Ontario has points in its last seven (6-0-1-0), the longest current streak in the league, and have just one regulation loss over its last 12 (9-1-2-0). Despite giving up three goals in the third period on Wednesday, the Reign have a league-best +20 rating in the final 20 minutes.

  

Luca Lightning: Rookie defenseman Luca Cagnoni picked up a pair of power-play points (1+1=2) on Wednesday and now leads the AHL in PP-points (25), T-first in power-play assists (16), and T-third in power-play goals (9). Among league blueliners, he is first in power-play points and assists, second in goals (13) and power-play goals, and T-second in points (36).

 

Power-Play Prowess: The Barracuda scored three times on the power play on Wednesday and now have power-play goals in six of seven (9/26=34%). San Jose ranks T-second in the AHL on the man advantage (23.1%) and third on the road (22.3%). Wednesday was the team’s 12th multi-power-play outing this season and third time in which they scored three or more. Against the Reign, the Barracuda are now 7/16 on the PP (44%).

 

Show Bound: The Sharks recalled defenseman Jack Thompson and forward Collin Graf on Tuesday. At the time of the recall, among AHL freshmen, Graf is T-second in assists (24) and sixth in points (31). Additionally, he is T-third in power-play assists (10). The 22-year-old has points in eight of his last nine (3+6=9) AHL outings.
