BARRACUDA STORM BACK, FALL IN OT
Jan 6, 2024Ontario, Ca. – The San Jose Barracuda (11-15-5-0) scored a season-high four goals in the third period on Saturday night at the Toyota Arena in Ontario but would eventually fall 5-4 in overtime to the Ontario Reign (18-10-3-1) as Sam Fagemo completed a hat trick in the extra session.
In the loss, Scott Sabourin notched his third career two-goal game, and the Barracuda also got tallies from defensemen Radim Simek and Shakir Mukhamadullin.
In the first, on the game’s first shot, Fagemo (14) beat Magnus Chrona glove-side to give the Reign a 1-0 lead. The Reign would extend their advantage after a neutral-zone giveaway by the Barracuda led to Sam Helenius (4) snapping in Ontario’s second goal of the game at 15:54.
In the second, the Reign would go up 3-0 on the power play as Akil Thomas (10) steered in a rebound from just above the crease.
In the final period, the Barracuda would break through as Simek (5) slung in a point-shot with a second remaining on the team’s first power play. Fagemo (15) pushed Ontario’s lead back to three at 4-1, but a minute and six seconds later, Ethan Frisch would find Mukhamadullin (5) parked in front of the net, cutting it back to two. At 15:54, Sabourin (7) would inch the Barracuda within a goal as he tipped in a Nathan Todd shot and then 2:01 later, Sabourin would tie the score at 4-4.
In overtime, the Barracuda were outshot 4-0 and as they began the the period on the penalty kill, and Fagemo would win it at 2:17 as the game got back to full strength.
