OUT IN ONTARIO: The Barracuda hit the road on Wednesday night to face the Ontario Reign (Los Angeles Kings) in the first of eight meetings between the clubs this season. San Jose enters the contest with a 4-6-0-0 record after earning a 3-2 overtime victory over the Bakersfield Condors on Sunday afternoon at Tech CU Arena. The win snapped a two-game losing streak and marked the Barracuda's second overtime victory of the season. A year ago, San Jose went 5-2-1-0 against the Reign, earning points in three of four road meetings (2-1-1-0).
McKEOWN MAGIC: For the second time this season, defenseman Roland McKeown delivered the overtime winner as the Barracuda edged the Bakersfield Condors, 3-2, on Sunday afternoon at Tech CU Arena. Bakersfield opened the scoring midway through the first period before Brendan Hoffmann tied the game with his second goal of the season. After the Condors regained the lead on a second-period power-play goal, Luca Cagnoni netted his first of the season to draw San Jose even. McKeown sealed the victory just 1:28 into overtime, while Eric Comrie made 18 saves. San Jose outshot Bakersfield 37-20, including 14-6 over the third period and overtime.
REIGN CHECK: Ontario enters Wednesday's contest having dropped four consecutive games, including back-to-back home losses to the Tucson Roadrunners this past weekend. The Reign are just 1-4-0-0 at Toyota Arena this season, with their lone win coming on Oct. 20 against the Calgary Wranglers (3-2). Former Barracuda forward Lane Pederson leads Ontario with 13 points (4g, 9a). The Reign have struggled to generate quality scoring opportunities at even strength, ranking 29th in expected goals (2.04), 29th in shot attempts from the slot (16.6) and 31st in shots on net from the slot off the rush (2.91). Ontario also ranks 27th in even-strength shot attempts (48.6) and 21st in goals scored at even strength (2.44). Defensively, the Reign rank 26th in expected goals against (2.75) and 28th in inner-slot shots on net allowed (6.86). Despite those struggles, Ontario has been effective in certain areas of puck management, ranking fourth in controlled-entry success rate (55.2%) and first in defensive-zone soft dump-in recovery and exit percentage (86.7%).
BARRACUDA BY THE NUMBERS: The Barracuda have been effective at generating quality scoring opportunities at even strength, ranking second in the AHL in shots on net from the slot off the rush (5.97), fifth in shots on net from the slot (15.0) and sixth in passes to the slot (14.7). San Jose also ranks fifth in second-chance shot attempts from the slot (2.15) and seventh in slot-driving plays (29.4). Despite those offensive strengths, the Barracuda have struggled defensively, ranking 28th in expected goals against (2.80), 29th in shots on net from the slot allowed (14.3) and 31st in second-chance shot attempts from the slot allowed (2.63). San Jose has also struggled to recover dump-ins, ranking 30th in offensive-zone dump-in recovery percentage (32.3%), but has been effective on the forecheck, ranking sixth in successful forechecking plays (29.4).
POLE RAISING: On Tuesday, the Sharks recalled rookie defenseman Eric Pohlkamp from the Barracuda for the first time in his professional career. The 22-year-old has recorded seven assists in 10 games this season, collecting at least one point in seven contests. At the time of his recall, Pohlkamp was tied for second among all AHL rookies in assists and fourth in points among rookie defensemen, while his seven helpers were tied for the Barracuda team lead. A fifth-round pick (132nd overall) by San Jose in 2023, Pohlkamp is coming off a standout season at the University of Denver, where he led all NCAA defensemen in goals (18) and points (39), helped the Pioneers capture the national championship and was named a top-three finalist for the Hobey Baker Award.
AYE AYE, CAPTAIN: The Barracuda named forward Jimmy Huntington the seventh captain in franchise history on Oct. 2. In his first season with San Jose a year ago, the Laval, Quebec, native posted a career-high 48 points (15 goals, 33 assists) in 71 games, finishing tied for second on the team in scoring and earning the Barracuda's Fan Favorite award. On Sunday, Huntington saw his career-long six-game point streak come to an end, but he continues to pace the team in scoring with 10 points.
