SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA SWING: The Barracuda close out their first road trip of the season on Saturday, taking on the San Diego Gulls at Pechanga Arena. San Jose enters the contest riding a two-game winning streak after earning a 5-2 victory over the Coachella Valley Firebirds on Friday night at Acrisure Arena. The win marked the Barracuda's first road victory of the season and their second consecutive triumph after beginning the year 1-4. Following Saturday's contest, San Jose will return home Wednesday to face the Abbotsford Canucks at Tech CU Arena.
FIREBIRDS EXTINGUISHED: Behind goals from five different skaters and a 22-save performance from Ilya Samsonov, the Barracuda earned a convincing 5-2 victory over the Coachella Valley Firebirds on Friday night at Acrisure Arena. Andre Gasseau opened the scoring at 5:10 of the first period with his team-leading fifth goal of the season, converting on a breakaway with a backhand-to-forehand move. Brett Leason doubled San Jose's advantage just 1:28 later, tipping home his third goal of the year. Libor Hájek netted the eventual game-winner in the second period, while Donavan Houle and Ethan Cardwell also scored. Alex Barré-Boulet collected two assists in his first game with the Barracuda this season as San Jose earned its first victory at Acrisure Arena since the 2024-25 campaign. The win also marked the first time this season that the Barracuda had won consecutive games.
GULL SETTING: The Barracuda and San Diego Gulls (Anaheim Ducks) renew their Pacific Division rivalry on Saturday in the third of eight meetings between the clubs this season. The teams opened the 2026-27 campaign with a two-game series at Tech CU Arena on Oct. 3-4, splitting the weekend set. San Diego claimed the season opener with a 5-1 victory before San Jose responded the following afternoon with a thrilling 5-4 overtime win. Roland McKeown scored the game-winner 3:01 into the extra session, while Filip Bystedt collected three points (two goals, one assist). Ethan Cardwell and Tye Felhaber each dished out three assists in the win. Saturday marks the Barracuda's first visit to Pechanga Arena this season.
REINFORCEMENTS ARRIVE: The Barracuda received a pair of reinforcements from the Sharks last week, with forwards Alex Barré-Boulet and Cam Lund assigned to the AHL after both had been sidelined by injuries. Barré-Boulet made his Barracuda debut on Friday against Coachella Valley, collecting two assists in San Jose's 5-2 victory. An AHL First Team All-Star last season, Barré-Boulet has been one of the league's most productive forwards since turning pro in 2018. He finished second in the AHL in scoring in 2025-26. Lund, a second-round pick (34th overall) by the Sharks in the 2022 NHL Draft, was named an AHL All-Star during his rookie campaign last season before his year was cut short by injury.
AYE AYE, CAPTAIN: The Barracuda named forward Jimmy Huntington the seventh captain in franchise history on Oct. 2. In his first season with San Jose a year ago, the Laval, Quebec, native posted a career-high 48 points (15 goals, 33 assists) in 71 games, finishing tied for second on the team in scoring and earning the Barracuda's Fan Favorite award. Huntington has made an immediate impact to begin the 2026-27 season, highlighted by a three-point performance (two goals, one assist) against Tucson on Oct. 9 and three assists in San Jose's 5-4 win over Calgary on Oct. 16. He is currently riding a career-long four-game point streak (three goals, five assists).
FIL THE THRILL: Sharks' 2022 first-round pick Filip Bystedt has been one of San Jose's top offensive contributors to begin the season. The 22-year-old center collected three points (two goals, one assist) in the Barracuda's 5-4 overtime victory against San Diego on Oct. 4, reaching the 100-point milestone in his AHL career. He followed with a power-play goal and an assist against Tucson on Oct. 9, giving him back-to-back multi-point performances. Bystedt led the Barracuda last season in points (60), assists (38), game-winning goals (6) and overtime goals (2), while finishing second in goals (22).
LEASON THE WAY: Barracuda forward Brett Leason has made an immediate impact since being assigned to the club on Oct. 8. The former second-round pick (56th overall) of the Washington Capitals in the 2019 NHL Draft brings 220 games of NHL experience, having spent time with Washington and Anaheim. The 6-foot-5 winger continued his strong start with San Jose on Friday, scoring his third goal of the season just 6:38 into the first period against Coachella Valley. Leason is now riding a three-game goal-scoring streak and has recorded points in four of his five games this season (three goals, two assists).
GASS UP: Barracuda forward Andre Gasseau has emerged as one of the AHL's hottest rookies, scoring four goals over his last three games and five on the season to lead San Jose. The first-year pro extended his goal-scoring streak to three games on Friday against Coachella Valley, opening the scoring at 5:10 of the first period with a breakaway goal. Gasseau began his current scoring surge with a two-goal performance against Calgary on Oct. 14, marking the first multi-goal game of his AHL career, before adding another goal against the Wranglers on Oct. 16. The Sharks acquired Gasseau's signing rights from Boston on June 18, 2026, along with a fourth-round pick (120th overall) in the 2026 NHL Draft, in exchange for a fourth-round pick (104th overall) and a fifth-round pick (157th overall). The 6-foot-4 forward signed a two-year, entry-level contract with San Jose on July 1 after completing four seasons at Boston College, where he totaled 111 points (43 goals, 68 assists) in 135 games.
