SAN JOSE, Calif. (Oct. 28, 2026) – Despite goals from Patrick Giles and Alex Barré-Boulet, the San Jose Barracuda (3-6-0-0) suffered a 5-2 loss to the Abbotsford Canucks (6-2-0-1) on Wednesday night at Tech CU Arena. Ben Berard scored twice for Abbotsford, while Riley Patterson added a goal and an assist as the Canucks extended their winning streak to six games. Ty Young made 24 saves in the victory, while Ilya Samsonov turned aside 21 shots for San Jose.
Abbotsford opened the scoring just 2:20 into the first period when Patterson netted his third goal of the season, burying a rebound from just outside the crease. The Canucks doubled their advantage at 8:23 when Berard ripped a shot through a screen from the right circle for his first goal of the year.
San Jose responded just 1:08 later while shorthanded, as Giles scored his first goal of the season unassisted at 9:31, snapping home a shot on a two-on-one rush to cut the deficit to 2-1. The Barracuda outshot Abbotsford 11-9 in the opening frame but entered the first intermission trailing by a goal.
The Barracuda pulled even early in the second period when Barré-Boulet scored his first goal of the season on the power play at 2:41, steering home his own rebound to tie the game at 2-2. The goal was assisted by captain Jimmy Huntington, who extended his point streak to a career-long six games.
Abbotsford regained the lead at 9:25 when Jacob Quillan capitalized on a Barracuda giveaway at the offensive blue line, scoring his team-leading fifth goal of the season off assists from Patterson and Gavin White. The Canucks extended their advantage to 4-2 at 15:47 when captain Chase Wouters netted his first goal of the year, snapping a shot off the far post and in. Abbotsford controlled much of the middle frame, outshooting San Jose 13-5.
The third period featured plenty of physicality, as Giles dropped the gloves with Vilmer Alriksson at 3:14 before Anthony Vincent squared off with Matthew Stienburg at 9:05. San Jose pushed to get back into the game, outshooting Abbotsford 10-4 in the final period, but the Canucks clogged the middle of the ice and limited the Barracuda's quality scoring opportunities. Berard sealed the victory with an empty-net goal at 16:02, his second tally of the night.
Barré-Boulet led all skaters with seven shots on goal. San Jose finished 1-for-2 on the power play and a perfect 3-for-3 on the penalty kill, while the teams finished even with 26 shots apiece.
The loss marked San Jose's second consecutive defeat and dropped the Barracuda to 2-5-0-0 on home ice this season.
The Barracuda close out their two-game homestand on Sunday at 3 p.m. when they host the Bakersfield Condors for Military Appreciation Night, presented by Clark Pest Control. For tickets, visit sjbarracuda.com/tickets.
