San Jose, Calif. – Despite outshooting the Bakersfield Condors 43-18, the San Jose Barracuda were shut out, 3-0, on Saturday evening at Tech CU Arena in their final preseason tune-up before the start of the 2026-27 regular season which will begin next Saturday, Oct. 3 (3 p.m.) against the San Diego Gulls in San Jose.

After combining for just three goals in Friday's preseason opener in Bakersfield, the two teams once again found themselves locked in a defensive battle through the opening 40 minutes.

San Jose controlled much of the play early, outshooting Bakersfield 14-6 in the first period and 12-5 in the second, but couldn't solve either of the Condors' goaltenders. Nathaniel Day stopped all 14 shots he faced in the opening period before Samuel Jonsson took over to begin the second and turned aside all 29 shots he saw the rest of the way.

After a scoreless first two periods, Bakersfield finally broke through at 4:48 of the third. Connor Clattenburg scored his first of the preseason a Jake Suede slid a pass over to him on a two-on-one following an offensive-zone giveaway for the Barracuda.

Bakersfield then took advantage of San Jose's penalty trouble to extend the lead.

With Ethan Cardwell in the box for slashing, Ethan Keppen made it 2-0 at 8:05, converting on the power play, ripping in a shot from the right circle. The Condors struck again with the man advantage just over four minutes later. After Donavan Houle was called for delay of game, Mitch Hults scored at 12:19, with Kopacka collecting his second assist of the night and Tomas Cibulka adding the secondary helper.

The Barracuda continued to generate chances down the stretch, firing 17 shots in the third period, but Jonsson held firm to complete the combined shutout. San Jose put 12 shots on goal over the final 6:02 after Bakersfield took a cross-checking penalty, but couldn't find the back of the net.

Eric Comrie made his first appearance of the preseason for San Jose and finished with 15 saves on 18 shots. All three Bakersfield goals came in the third period after Comrie had stopped the first 11 shots he faced through 40 minutes.

San Jose received plenty of offensive-zone pressure throughout the night. Roland McKeown and Houle led the Barracuda with five shots apiece, while Jimmy Huntington and Carson Wetsch each finished with four. Andre Gasseau, Tye Felhaber, Ethan Cardwell, Leo Sahlin Wallenius and Thomas Messineo each recorded three shots.

Special teams proved to be the difference. San Jose finished 0-for-6 on the power play, while Bakersfield went 2-for-4, with both Condors' power-play goals coming in the third period.

The loss gives San Jose a split of its two-game preseason series with Bakersfield after the Barracuda earned a 2-1 shootout victory on Friday night at Dignity Health Arena.
