BARRACUDA BATTLE BACK, SINK GULLS IN OVERTIME, 5-4
SAN JOSE, Calif. (Oct. 4, 2026) – The San Jose Barracuda (1-1-0-0) erased a pair of two-goal deficits and completed the comeback in overtime, defeating the San Diego Gulls (1-0-1-0), 5-4, on Sunday afternoon at Tech CU Arena. Former Gull Roland McKeown scored the game-winner at 3:01 of overtime, while Filip Bystedt finished with two goals and an assist, and Ethan Cardwell and Tye Felhaber each collected three assists.
San Diego jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of goals just 42 seconds apart midway through the opening period. Stian Solberg opened the scoring at 8:43 before Nathan Gaucher doubled the advantage at 9:25. Barracuda captain Jimmy Huntington answered just over a minute later, burying a backhander after Cardwell won the puck free and slid it over to him at 10:26.
San Jose pulled even with 27 seconds remaining in the first. Leo Sahlin Wallenius and Felhaber combined to set up Bystedt, who beat Damian Clara for his first goal of the year following a broken stick by Gulls defenseman Matt Basgall, sending the teams into the intermission tied at two.
The Gulls regained control in the second period. Roger McQueen made it 3-2 at 3:14 before Anton Wahlberg extended the lead to 4-2 at 9:52. San Jose again responded, as Andre Gasseau scored his first AHL goal, batting in his own mishandled shot at 17:14.
The Barracuda needed just 90 seconds of the third period to tie the game. With Yegor Sidorov in the penalty box, Bystedt converted on the power play for his second goal of the afternoon. Felhaber faked a slap shot before sliding the puck to the back post, where Bystedt redirected it in. The goal capped San Jose's second comeback from a two-goal deficit and made it 4-4.
After the remainder of regulation went scoreless, McKeown ended it at 3:01 of overtime, carrying the puck from his own zone down the left wing before cutting across the crease and beating Clara on a backhand-to-forehand move. Felhaber and Bystedt picked up the assists as McKeown scored his first goal of the season to give San Jose its first win of 2026-27.
Matt Davis earned the victory in his first start of the season, stopping 28 of 32 shots, while Clara made 28 saves on 33 shots for San Diego. The Barracuda finished 1-for-3 on the power play and killed off both Gulls opportunities. San Jose held a 33-32 edge in shots.
