Six Players Have Suited Up For the Barracuda and Sharks This Season

Look Back:
The San Jose Barracuda (2-3-0-1, 5pts, .417%) presented by Barracuda Networks chomped one out of a possible six points last week (0-2-0-1) in three games.  San Jose extended their point streak to three games (2-0-0-1) with a 3-2 shootout loss vs. San Diego on Oct 21 but had the streak snapped in a 3-0 loss to the Gulls on Oct 23.  The Barracuda wrapped up the week with a 3-0 loss in Ontario on Oct 24.

Bryan Lerg (1-1-2) led the way offensively for the Barracuda and received his 2nd NHL recall of the season after the game on Oct 21.  Scott Timmins scored the 1st shorthanded goal in franchise history on Oct 21.  Goaltenders Aaron Dell (45 saves, 4GA) and Troy Grosenick (40 saves, 3GA) each stood their ground in between the pipes for the Barracuda. Defenseman Dylan Demelo made his SJ Barracuda debut on Oct 21 after beginning the season with the Sharks.

Mirco Mueller, Bryan Lerg, John McCarthy, and Micheal Haley all received NHL recalls last week to the San Jose Sharks but are all currently with the Barracuda as of Oct 27.  Forward Adam Helewka was released from his ATO on Oct 25 and returned to Spokane in the WHL.

The San Jose Barracuda player of the week nominee is veteran forward Bryan Lerg.  The 29-year-old from Livonia, Michigan recorded two points (1-1-2), +2, and five shots in one game with the Barracuda before receiving his 2nd NHL recall of the season.

MILESTONE ALERT:
Head Coach Roy Sommer surpassed Frank Mathers (1256 games coached) for the most games coached in AHL history on March 26, 2014 in the Sharks 5-3 win in Lewiston, ME over the Portland Pirates.  Coach Sommer has coached 1350 AHL games – all with the SJ Sharks AHL affiliates. In total, Coach Sommer has been a head coach in 1,686 games in the AHL and ECHL.  Coach Sommer picked up his 600th career AHL win in a 4-3 victory in Lehigh Valley on Feb 4, 2015 and surpassed Frank Mathers (610 wins) for 2nd all-time in AHL history on March 27 in Springfield with his 611th win!  Roy needs 17 wins to tie Fred “Bun Cook” (636 wins) for the most wins in AHL history!

10.21.15 – San Diego 3 – San Jose 2 – SOL – SAP Center – San Jose, CA
The San Jose Barracuda (2-1-0-1, 5pts) presented by Barracuda Networks fell short 3-2 in an exciting shootout loss to the visiting San Diego Gulls (3-0-0-0, 6pts) at the SAP Center on Wednesday evening.  The two teams battle again at the SAP Center on Friday night at 7pm. Bryan Lerg (1-1-2) and Scott Timmins (1-0-1) scored for the Barracuda while Troy Grosenick made 29 saves in net for San Jose in the shootout loss.  Nick Ritchie and Stefan Noesen scored for the Gulls in the shootout and John Gibson made 25 saves in net as the Gulls won their third straight game to open the season.

10.23.15 – San Diego 3 – San Jose 0 – L – SAP Center – San Jose CA
The San Jose Barracuda (2-2-0-1, 5pts) presented by Barracuda Networks lost 3-0 to the visiting San Diego Gulls (4-0-0-0, 8pts) in front of 3,156 fans at the SAP Center on Friday evening.  The San Jose Barracuda hit the road to battle the Ontario Reign on Saturday at 6pm. Aaron Dell made 31 saves in net for San Jose in the 3-0 loss.  Chris Wagner (1-0-1), Chris Mueller (1-1-2) and Nick Ritchie (1-0-1) scored for San Diego.  John Gibson made 23 saves for the shutout as the Gulls won their fourth straight game to begin the season and swept the two game set in San Jose.

10.24.15 – Ontario 3 – San Jose 0 –  L – Citizens Business Bank Arena – Ontario, CA
The San Jose Barracuda (2-3-0-1, 5pts) presented by Barracuda Networks dropped their third straight game after a 3-0 loss to the host Ontario Reign (5-0-0-0, 10pts) in front of 8,285 fans at the Citizens Business Bank Arena on Saturday evening.  The Barracuda are back in action on Sunday, November 1 at 3pm vs. the Reign at the SAP Center. Ontario netminder Peter Budaj picked up his third shutout of the season with 24 saves as the Barracuda have now been shutout in eight consecutive periods.  Andrew Crensenzi’s goal just 67 seconds into the contest stood tall but the Reign added insurance goals by Adrian Kempe and Michael Mersch in the third period for the home victory.

*1257 GAMES…..With the 5-3 win in Lewiston, ME vs. the Pirates on March 26, 2014, head coach Roy Sommer surpassed Frank Mathers (1,256 games) for the most games coached in the AHL.

*1,600 GAMES… With the 3-0 loss vs. the Norfolk Admirals on April 12, 2014, head coach Roy Sommer coached in his 1,600th professional game.

*500 WINS!.... With a 3-2 shootout victory in Hershey on February 11, 2012, head coach Roy Sommer became just the 4th coach in AHL history to reach the 500 win plateau. 

*600 WINS!....with the 4-3 win at Lehigh Valley on February 4, 2015, head coach Roy Sommer became just the 3rd coach in AHL history to reach the 600 win plateau.

*611 WINS…. With the 6-3 win at Springfield on March 27, 2015, head coach Roy Sommer moved past Frank Mather (610) for the 2nd most wins in AHL history with his 611th win.

*In Coach Sommer’s first AHL victory….   The Kentucky Thoroughblades defeated the Albany River Rats 6-4 at the Rupp Arena in Lexington, Kentucky on October 17, 1998. 

Barracuda Bites:
*Captains for the 2015-16 season:  Bryan Lerg was named captain on Oct 6 while John McCarthy was named an alternate captain.  Micheal Haley, Karl Stollery, and Dylan DeMelo have all worn the A this season as well for the Barracuda.

*Breaking down October… The Barracuda had a 2-3-0-1 (5pts in 6gp) record in October with 12 GF and 17 GA. PP went 3-24 (12.5%); opponents PP went 6-25 (15.4%), and the Barracuda had 3 fighting majors in October.

*Streakers….no current point streaks for the SJ Barracuda.

*Quiet times ahead… the Barracuda are in the middle of a stretch where they play just one game over a 13 day stretch (game on Nov 1).

*Goal drought… the Barracuda have been shutout in their last 161:20 of play…the last goal scored was a shorthanded goal by Scott Timmins at 18:40 of the first period vs. the Gulls on Oct 21.

*Suspensions…San Jose Barracuda defenseman Karl Stollery was suspended for one (1) game as a consequence of an elbowing incident in a game vs. San Diego on Oct. 21. Stollery was suspended under the provisions of AHL Rule 28.1 (supplementary discipline). Karl missed San Jose’s game on Oct. 23 vs. San Diego.

*3 National Champions… The Barracuda have three players that won the NCAA Division 1 Championships…. Gus Young was captain with Yale University in 2013….John McCarthy with Boston University in 2009…Bryan Lerg with Michigan State in 2007.

*Memorial Cups…defenseman Mark Cundari and forward Scott Timmins each won a pair of Memorial Cups in 2009 and 2010 with the Windsor Spitfires (OHL). Vincent Arseneau won the Cup with the Shawinigan Cataractes in 2012.

*Swedish Elite League Championship…. both Melker Karlsson and Petter Emanuelsson won back-to-back championships with Skelleftea AIK in the SWEHL in 2013 and 2014.

*Kelly Cup Champions… Chris Crane and Vincent Arseneau each won the Kelly Cup (ECHL Championship) with the Allen Americans last season.

*CHL Championship… Aaron Dell won the Central Hockey League Championship with  the Allen Americans in 2013.

*Oldest/Youngest… Bryan Lerg is the oldest player on the Barracuda roster (born Jan 20, 1986) while Julius Bergman is the youngest (born Nov 2, 1995).

*High scorer in the Q… rookie Nikita Jevpalovs recorded 100 points (49-51-100) in 64 games for Blainville-Boisbriand in the QMJHL last season. The 21-year-old from Riga, Latvia has three points (1-2-3) in six games for the Barracuda.

*The Sherriff… Frazer McLaren re-signed in the off-season with the SJ Sharks organization after spending the last 2+ seasons in the Toronto organization. McLaren holds the Worcester Sharks franchise record with 577 penalty minutes and has seven penalty minutes in four games for the Barracuda.

*J-Mac… John McCarthy led the Worcester Sharks in points (151) and goals (63) and was tied in the franchise lead in games played (277).  McCarthy also served as the Worcester Sharks captain in 2012-13 and was the Worcester Sharks MVP in 2011-12. McCarthy is (0-0-0) in five games with the Barracuda and  (0-0-0) in one game with the SJ Sharks.

*Young Guns… the Barracuda have dressed 8 AHL rookies already this season. (Joakim Ryan, Adam Helewka Patrick McNally, Nikita Jevpalovs, Vinny Arseneau, Nikolay Goldobin, Chris Crane, and Julius Bergman)
