Mar 8, 2017
SAN DIEGO, CALIF. - The San Jose Barracuda (34-12-2-4) erased a three-goal deficit but came up short, 7-6, to the San Diego Gulls (33-14-3-2) in overtime at Valley View Casino Center on Wednesday night.
The Barracuda and Gulls combined for eight opening-period tallies and San Diego entered the first intermission with a 5-3 lead. Kevin Labanc (6) poked a loose puck through Dustin Tokarski five-hole on the power play at 6:50 to open up the scoring, but after Barclay Goodrow was called for a four-minute double minor for high sticking, San Diego cashed in twice on the man advantage, Nick Sorensen (9) at 9:02 and then Anton Laganiere (18) at 10:01. Tim Heed (12) blasted a slap shot from the high slot at 11:25 to tie the score at 2-2, but Sam Carrick (13) and Corey Tropp (17) extended the Gulls lead to 4-2 at 12:15 and 14:01. Colin Blackwell powered his way to the net and beat Tokarski short side at 16:36, but 18 seconds later Laganiere (19) netted his second of the game to make it 5-3.
In the second, Mantas Armalis relieved Troy Grosenick who had allowed five goals on 13 shots in the first. San Diego extended its lead with its third power play goal. Nic Kerdiles(5) returned from a first-period injury and beat Armalis through the five-hole from close range. 47 seconds later, Alex Gallant swiped a backdoor pass to Nikita Jevpalovs (12) who tapped home San Jose's fourth goal of the game to make it 6-4 at 13:38.
43 seconds into the third, Barclay Goodrow (18) beat Tokarski after forcing a turnover to make it 6-5, and Timo Meier (12) completed the comeback at 5:54 with a seeing-eye wrister from the top of the right circle, ending Tokarski's night. Like Sunday, overtime was needed, but this time San Diego would come out victorious. Tyler Morley (4) in OT received a pass from Shea Theodore and chipped it over Armalis's right arm at 4:50 of the extra session.
