Condor Connection: On Wednesday, the Barracuda return to the ice after a week off to take on the Bakersfield Condors for the seventh time on the 10-game season series. The Barracuda are coming off a 6-3 loss to the Condors last Wednesday at the SAP Center and are 2-4 against the Bakersfield this season and 2-1 in San Jose.
Nick at Nite: After a 13-game goalless drought from Jan. 14 to Feb. 19, Nick Merkley has scored in his last two games and is riding a three-game point streak (2+2=4). Merkley’s six points (1+5=6) in five games against Bakersfield this season is pacing both teams.
Light-Halb: Jayden Halbgewachs notched a pair of goals in the Barracuda’s 6-3 loss to the Condors last Wednesday, his fifth career multi-goal game. Halbgewachs has three points (2+1=3) over his last two games and has four points (2+2=4) in six games against the Condors this season. In 36 career games against the Oilers affiliate, Halbgewachs has collected 18 points (8+10=18). The fourth-year pro is pacing the Barracuda in points (14+16=30) and is t-first in power-play assists (9).
Cuda Killa: Bakersfield goaltender Stuart Skinner is 2-0 against the Barracuda this year, picking up a 21-save win in the last meeting on Feb. 23, 6-3. In his career, he is 15-2 against the Sharks affiliate, having won four-straight dating back to last year. Skinner was given both starts for the Condors this past weekend in Grand Rapids, going 1-0-1, earning a 22-save shutout on Friday.
Cool Condor: Since missing a pair of games against the Barracuda on Jan. 22 and 23, Seth Griffith has 19 points (11+8=19) over his last 15 games and ranks fifth in the league in scoring (52), fifth in power-power assists (17), t-fourth in assists (32), and first in shooting percentage (28.8%). Against the Barracuda, Griffith leads the team with six points (4+2=6) in four games and has 15 points (9+6=15) in 15 career outings against the Barracuda. Griffith notched a goal and an assist in the Condors last outing and is coming off a two-goal performance against the Barracuda last Wednesday.
Sommer Time: On Jan. 8, 2022, head coach Roy Sommer picked up AHL victory #800 with a 6-3 win over the Henderson Silver Knights. The Oakland, Calif., native has been behind the bench for 1,719 games in the AHL, going 804-707-48-160 (W-L-T-OTL/SOL) over that span. During the 2015-16 season, the Barracuda’s first in San Jose, Sommer surpassed Fred “Bun” Cook (636 wins) for the most wins in AHL history, notching a 4-2 victory on Feb. 10, 2016, over Ontario. Sommer collected his 700th win on Dec. 3, 2017, at Bakersfield (2-1 W).
