BARRACUDA SCORE A PAIR IN THE THIRD, WIN 2-0
Jan 14, 2017
San Jose, CA - The San Jose Barracuda (18-9-1-3) used two third period goals to seize the lead and held on for a 2-0 win over the Stockton Heat on Saturday afternoon at SAP Center.
The Barracuda ended the afternoon, going 8-for-8 on the penalty kill and Mantas Armalis(9-2-2) made all 19 saves to earn his second career AHL shutout.
After both teams had less than 16 hours to recover from a game the night before, each club used the first period to work their way into the game. San Jose went 0-for-3 on the power play, and Stockton failed to find the back of the net on their lone man advantage, and the shots were even at four after 20 minutes.
In the second, both netminders made a pair of sensational saves, but the score stayed at a deadlock. Nikolay Goldobin received a pass from Barclay Goodrow from below the goal line, but Jon Gillies robbed the grade-A chance from close range and then Danny O'Regansnuck behind the Heat defense and went forehand-to-backhand but was denied by the right pad of Gillies.
After neither team had scored in the first 45 minutes and 41 seconds, Goodrow jumped out of the penalty box and found Nikita Jevpalovs (5) between the circles and Jevpalovs ripped a shot under Gillies left arm to break the scoreless tie at 5:41 of the third. The Barracuda added some insurance as Rourke Chartier (8) went top-shelf short side at 9:59 to make it 2-0.
Jon Gillies took the hard-luck loss (10-7-3) after allowing two goals on 25.
