BARRACUDA ROB REIGN IN OVERTIME
Feb 16, 2023The San Jose Barracuda (19-25-0-4) jumped out to a two-goal lead on Wednesday night at Tech CU Arena, only to fall behind by a goal in the third, before tying the score and winning 4-3 in overtime versus the Ontario reign (26-17-2-1). With the victory, the Barracuda snapped a five-game skid.
In the first, Danil Gushchin (10) opened the scoring by collecting a pass off his right skate before proceeding to beat Cal Petersen on the far side from between his legs. Then at 14:13, while on the power play, Kyle Criscuolo (10) tipped in a Thomas Bordeleau point-shot to make it 2-0 Barracuda. SJ matched a season-high by putting 20 shots on net in the first and took a two-goal lead into the intermission.
In the second, despite outshooting the Reign 11-7, Ontario would manage to tie the game with a pair of goals. First, Jacob Moverare (3) snapped a shot past a partially screened Strauss Mann at 7:06, and then, Sam Helenius (1) notched his first of the year by ripping a shot through the five hole of Mann at 10:48 from atop the left circle.
In the third, Lias Andersson (21) handed Ontario its first lead at 7:31 as he went far-side from the right-wing, beating Mann under the mitt to make it 3-2 Reign. But C.J. Suess (5) would tie the game for San Jose from a sharp angle after receiveing a feed from Ozzy Wiesblatt who found him from below the goalline. The goal was Suess’ 100th AHL point of his career.
The game would go to overtime, and 2:52, Gushchin (11) sealed the victory with a backhander past Petersen that came right after the rookie forward had hit the post and was turned aside by Petersen on a backhand move..
San Jose outshot the Reign 41-26 in the win and both Andrew Agozzino (0+2=2) and Gushchin (2+0=2) finished with two points each.
Mann (4-4-0) made 23 saves on 26 shots for his fourth win on the season.
